- This research discussed about improving students’ reading comprehension by using Extensive Reading Approach (ERA) at grade X SMK N 1 Padangsidimpuan. The problems of this research were students difficult to comprehend English text. They were difficult to find main idea, making inferences and interpret words, phrases and sentences related to the text. Students were lazy and feel boring when they are asked to comprehend the texts. So, it made students difficult to get high score in reading comprehension.The purpose of this research was to examine the extent of Extensive Reading Approach (ERA) whether it improves students’ reading comprehension at grade X SMK N 1 Padangsidimpuan or not. In order to achieve the purpose of this research, the researcher conducted classroom action research, by implementing the Kemmis and Mc Taggart design which consisted four steps; they were planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. In this research, the researcher used two cycles and each cycle consisted of two meetings. In addition, the participants of this research were the class of X 3Accounting class which consisted of 36 students and also there was collaboration with an English Teacher. Meanwhile, the data were derived among from quantitative (mean score of students’reading tests), and qualitative (observation notes and interview). Based on the research result, showed the improvement mean score of the students. The first test in the first cycle was 71.92 (36.11%) and second test in the second cycle was 79.86 (91.67%).It can be concluded that the mean score in the second cycle was higher than the first cycle. Based on observation notes stated that the students got improvement and the students were more active and interested in learning reading comprehension. Related to the interview result, it could be known that students’ reading comprehension had improved. It asserted that Extensive Reading Approach (ERA) can improve students’ reading comprehension at grade X SMK N 1 Padangsidimpuan.
