- This research discussed about students’ problem in speaking ability at grade XI SMA Negeri 3 Padangsidimpuan. The fact is revealed that the students’ motivation in speaking ability is less because they seem to be afraid to speak out so that they are lack of self-confidence. Then, students come from different ethnic groups like 49 Bataknese, 3 Nias, 4 Javanese and 21 Malay. So, the students’ accent is different each other. The phenomenon in the field, the Bataknese is difficult to speak English smooth. It relates to the pronunciation. The last, the English teacher has only the monotous technique to teach English speaking ability. Then, aims of this research are: to describe the students’ speaking ability before using groupwork technique of grade XI of SMA Negeri 3 Padangsidimpuan, to describe the students’ speaking ability after using groupwork technique of grade XI of SMA Negeri 3 Padangsidimpuan, and to describe the significant effect of using groupwork technique in teaching learning process towards grade XI SMA Negeri 3 Padangsidimpuan students’ speaking ability. The research was conducted by quantitative method and experimental research approach. The population of this research was 337 students of the grade XI. Then, the sample of research intended 77 students. Next, the pre-test and post-test about speaking ability were given to the respondents for conventional and experimental class. To analysis the data, the researcher used formulation of t-test. After calculating the data to show the description of the data was found that the mean score of experimental class higher than control class (86.32>77.44) and the score of t0 was bigger than ts (3.27>1,665). It means that the hypothesis was accepted. It was concluded that there was a significant effect of groupwork technique on students’ achievement in speaking ability at grade XI SMA Negeri 3 Padangsidimpuan. Finally, the research suggested using groupwork technique was effective to improve the speaking ability.
