- This research is taken based on fact of the problems in academic writing especially in writing essay. The researcher identified many problems such as lack of interest, lack in the comprehension of the composition of academic writing, motivation to write is too low, the subject is difficult, lack of imagination to write, students tends to ignore some major parts of the composition, and lack of diction. So, the students should be more aware of the importance of the regulation in composing academic writing intentionally to provide the best result. At last, the researcher conducted a research based on this topic. The purpose of this research was to know how the students’ seventh semester of English Education (TBI) STAIN Padangsidimpuan ability in writing essay in 2011 was and to know students’ difficulties in writing essay. In this research, the researcher has taken 15 students as the source of the research. This research was qualitative approach by using descriptive method. As for the instrument for collecting the data the researcher used the interview and test. After getting the result of the research, it can be concluded that the students’ seventh semester of English Education (TBI) STAIN Padangsidimpuan ability in writing essay was 57,5%. It can be categorized into adequate categories. From the result of the research, the researcher found that there were some difficulties that faced by students when they composed essay, they were conclusion, vocabulary, paragraph development and diction
