  • The objective of the research was to examine whether there is a significant effect of using discussion strategy to students’ ability in reading comprehension mastery or there is no significant effect of using discussion strategy to students’ ability in reading comprehension mastery. In order to achieve the purpose of this research, the writer carried out the quantitative approach by applying experimental research. The population of this research was the tenth grade students of MAS YPKS Padangsidimpuan. They were X IPA1 is 31 students and X IPS1 is 31 students so the sample is 62 students. The writer used all the population as the sample. In collecting the data, the instrument was multiple choice tests. The number of test consists of 50 items of tests. They were 25 items of pretest and 25 items of post test. To analyze the data, it was used t-test formula. Based on the data, it was found that (1) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension by using discussion strategy as “good” (73.93), (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension by using conventional strategy as “good” (71.84), and (3) there is significant different between reading comprehension by using discussion strategy and conventional strategy at MAS YPKS Padangsidimpuan. (ts = 0,19), categorized as “very low”. It means that the hypothesis is accepted
