- The purpose of this research was to described students’ ability in summarizing descriptive text at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Panyabungan, to identify the students’ problems in summarizing and to identify the causes of the problem in summarizing The research was done at SMP Negeri1 Panyabungan. In this research, researcher used qualitative approach in the type of the descriptive analysis. The sources of data was the second years students, there were 27 students as sample of analytical unit from 224 students at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Panyabungan. In collecting data, the research used the instrument of the research are test, interview and field notes. The data was processed and analyzed by qualitative process. Based on the result of the research, researcher found that the students’ ability in summarizing descriptive text at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Panyabungan was enough categories (47.25%). There was some problems in summarizing, the problem are the students could not distinguish between main idea and important idea, did not know what the main idea and what the function, confused in understanding the text, lazy to read the text and lazy to write all supporting detail, could not write English text, could not translate the text, did not know what the supporting detail, confused and difficult to constructing sentence, did not understand about sentence elements while write English text, in write English did not care about grammar and punctuation.
