- The aims of this research is to know the students’ ability in using relative clause in writing complex sentence at MTs N 1 Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat, to know difficulties that faced by students in using relative clause in writing complex sentence at MTs N 1 Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat, to know the efforts done by English teacher to overcome the students’ difficulties in MTs N 1 Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat. The research was done in MTs N 1 Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat. The sources of da ta was the second years students, English teacher in MTs N 1 Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat. The kind was qualitative research by using descriptive method. The instrument of data collection was observation, interview and test. After the research, it was known that the students’ ability in using relative clause in writing complex sentence at MTs N 1 Gunung Tuleh Pasaman Barat can be categorized in to enough category, mean score 44.4%. The students’ difficulties in using relative clause in writing complex sentence were poor vocabulary, the lack of mastering grammar, lack of the knowledge to understand how to use relative clause in writing complex sentence. The efforts done by English teacher to overcome the students’ difficulties were repeat lesson, give explanation, exercised and motivated.
