- The problems of this research are: 1) Students difficulties in vocabularies using right grammar and punctuation and form, 2) Students do not have motivation in writing, 3) students does not have innovative media in teaching writing. Therefore, this research purposed to examine that by using pictorial story media can improve students’ writing skill at SMP N 1 Batang Angkola Tapanuli Selatan. The method used in this research is classroom action research, that consisted of two cycles. This research used model proposed by Kemmis that involved four phases in a cycle of research: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The participants of this research were the class of VIII-E consisted of 21 students and also there was collaboration with an English teacher. Meanwhile, the data was derived among from writing tests, observation notes, and also interview. Based on the research result, showed the improvement mean score of the students, the first test in the first cycle was 56.19, and second test in the second cycle was 62.38. It can be concluded that the mean score in the second cycle was higher than the first cycle. Based on observation notes stated that the students got improvement and the students were more active and interested in learning process. Related to the interview result, it could be known that students’ writing skill had improved. It asserted that pictorial story media improved students’ writing skill.
