- ABSTRACT Andri Prasetia (321410186) : THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING RECIPROCAL TEACHING TO IMPROVE READING COMPREHENSION (A Pre-Experimental Study on the Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 1 Selimbau in the Academic Year of 2018/2019). The purposes of this research were To find out the Reciprocal Teaching Strategy is effective for teaching reading comprehension and To find out how the Reciprocal Teaching strategy is effective for teaching reading comprehension to eighth grade of SMP N 1 Selimbau in the academic year of 2018/2019. The thesis was a pre experimental research in the form of one group pretest – posttest. The populations of this research is the Eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Selimbau in the academic year of 2018/2019 and the sample chosen was VIII A consisted of 35 students. The sample was selected with cluster random sampling technique. The research has been conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Selimbau on July 2019. The technique of data collection applied in this research was measurement technique. The data were collected through reading comprehension test in form of objectives test and analyzed by using expert judgment. The pre-test and post-test were conducted in order to collect the data from the students. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistic. The researcher used the data distribution. Since the data was normal the researcher used paired sample test analysis to test the hypotheses and used Cohen’s effect size to test the effect of t he use of Reciprocal Teaching Strategy. The research findings showed that Reciprocal Teaching Startegy was effective in reading comprehension mastery, it was proved by the mean score during pre-test and post-test were 60 and 75 which means that there were difference before and after treatment. The SD of pre-test (11,604) was higher than SD of post-test (9,531). It showed that the treatment was well implemented. Lastly it was proved by paired sample t-test value, sig value was smaller than α (0,00 < 0,005) which means that Ha was accepted and H was rejected. The effect of using Reciprocal Teaching was at moderate effect level based on the Cohen’s effect. It was 0,51 which means strong enough to uplift students’ reading skill.
