  • Shallots ((Allium cepa var ascalonikum. Linn) is one of the horticultural commodities that have high economic value in Indonesia. Cultivation of onions that are seasonal causes the onion can’t be produced outside the season. Genetic improvement of plants can be done by mutation initiation. The mutation breeding method using 60Co gamma rays is carried out by determining the appropriate radiation dose. This study aims to determine the dose that causes LD20 and LD50, to determine the effect of 60Co gamma rays on the diversity of onion plants. This research was carried out irradiation at the Central Laboratory of PAIR BATAN and planted in the farmer's garden of Ketindan, Lawang District, Malang Regency, East Java in October 2019 to January 2020. The study used 1 dose treatment factor gamma rays consisting of 8 levels, namely 0 Gy to 7 Gy. The results showed LD20 and LD50 on the Bauji variety shallots were 43,527 Gray and 112,154 Gray, and the influence of 60Co gamma ray irradiation on the growth and yield characteristics of shallots in each parameter of plant length, number of leaves, number of tillers, wet tuber weight per clump, dry tuber weight per clump, and tuber diameter.
