- The aim of this study was to determine the effect of reaction time and catalyst concentration on the conversion of biodiesel from kapok seed oil. The biodiesel synthesis process is carried out in high pressure stirred batch reactor. This research was conducted in two stages, pretreatment and synthesis stages. The pretreatment stage (esterification) is aimed to reduce the free fatty acid content of kapok seed oil. The second stage is biodiesel synthesis process with reaction time variations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 hours at a pressure of 4 bar and a temperature of 60 C. The catalyst used is potassium hydroxide (KOH) with variations concentrations of 0.5’ 1.0’ 1.5, and 2.0% by weight of oil). The results showed that the reaction time and catalyst concentration had a significant effect on biodiesel conversion. The longer of the reaction time and the increasing of the catalyst concentration, the biodiesel conversion tends to increase. The highest biodiesel conversion was produced at a reaction time of 0.5 hours, the catalyst concentration was 1.5%, which was 94.31%.
