the source of the data that is analyzed. This study uses a qualitative method. The data
from this study were taken from the novel. The writer applies Ullman and Leech‟s
theories for the types and meanings of metaphor. In conducting the research, the
writer is dealing with two purposes: (1) find out types of metaphor in Tortilla Flat
novel (2) find out meanings of metaphors used in Tortilla Flat novel. Having
analyzed the data, the writer draws two conclusions. The writer found several types of
metaphor, namely anthropomorphic, animal, from concrete to abstract, and
synaesthetic metaphor. Among four types of metaphor, from concrete to abstract
metaphor is mostly used and synaesthetic metaphor is the rare one. The writer also
found several meanings of metaphor which are social meaning, affective meaning,
and reflected meaning. Among the three meanings, affective meaning is mostly used
and reflected meaning is rare to use.
