- Abstract: The study aims to describe the cultural meaning of the “Sranan” tradition found in the Wonokromo Village, Alian Subdistrict, Kebumen. “Sranan” tradition is a tradition that is done by farmers in the Wonokromo Village which means to start the planting season. The tradition is held by village implements especially headman and village scretary as a symbol to start planting season. The study is a qualitative descriptibe that uses an ethnolinguistics approach by utilizing ethnographic methods. The data in this study is a verbal and non-verbal expression reflected in the tradition of the offerings. The data source in this study comes from the informans and the events of the tradition. Data collecton methods uses interview and observation methods. The result of the study in the form of cultural meaning contained in the “Sranan” tradition include (1) “sranan” tradition as an offering to the ruler of rice field (Dewi Sri) to avoid all kinds of pests that damage crops, (2) as an intermediary to ask God for salvation, and (3) as an aplication to be given a smooth provision and abundant crops.
