- Abstract: Shadow puppet show is a valuable art performance. In the shadow puppet show, there is a language barrier. Language pedhalangan also called sastra antawacana in shadow puppet show. This includes ginem, pocapan ,antantant, and suluk. Sastra Antawacana knowledge is something that must be possessed by a dalang or puppeteer in playing the art of shadow puppets. The discussion of the literature of discourse is very interesting if studied in the study of discourse, especially in the discourse device.This study aimed to analyze form and describing one of the device in discourse. The device is subtitution on the “Ginem” of Shadow Puppet entitled “Dewa Ruci” by Ki Manteb Sudharsono. This study foucused on the one of the aspect of grammatical cohesion, that is subtitution. The type of this study is Qualitative Descriptive by the topic was about antawacana literature of “Ginem”. The data collecting method was “simak” and “catat”. The Subtitution form found in this study such as nominal subtitution, verbal, phrasal, and clausal. The result of this research showed that phrasal substitution is the most and dominant. The reason is because in the antawacana literature especially “Ginem” has many beautiful language that describe by phrase.
