  • The recent stock markets global meltdown originated and aggravated by the sub-prime mortgage debacle in the US has shown that the international monetary system in this globalization era is intertwined in the sense that it is prone to spread malfunction in one country rapidly to a global scale and intensity. As Indonesia, as a small economy, is bound by the Washington Consensus in its macro-economic policy, the consequences of the adoption of the principles laid out in the Consensus need to be carefully investigated in order to prevent the country from plunging time and again into deep financial crisis in future. Especially so, as the Mundell-Fleming model has been seen as a model showing the flaws of the Consensus three pillar rules when adopted for small economies like Indonesia, therefore dubbed as the ‘impossible triangle’ in the international economic theory.
