  • ABSTRACT Rainfed rice fields are rice fields, where irrigation comes from rain water. So that the cultivation pattern that allows the farmers in a period of one year is rice-rice-corn. Each planting season is done by monoculture only rice or corn only. The average ownership of farmers' land in the Gemah Ripah Farmer Group is 0.5 Ha. Farmers' income from rice cultivation with planting area less than 1 Ha averaged Rp 1,600,000, - with R / C ratio 1.31 (Farkhan, 2007). Based on this, it is necessary to increase the income of farmers' families from the resources they have, because the only one is a field with an average area of less than 1 Ha, then one that can be done is to optimize the land resources owned by farmers, through the utilization of rice field embankments with planted horticultural crops. The method used is the approach of active participation with farmers who are members of farmer groups, and coordinate with the local village and agricultural agencies.Utilization of bunds in rain-fed rice fields intercropping with horticulture can increase farmers' income. Additional income each harvest season of horticultural crops such as oyong, mustard greens, and cucumber. This plant is able to harvest as much as 4-5 times during the rice growing season. Land use system to be done before planting to optimize the productivity of the land. Key word: embankment, rainfed lowland, horticulture, intercropping, land optimization
