  • This research was conducted to observe the phonological errors done by English Language Education Department student of Muhammadiyah University of Gresik in pronouncing five English consonantal sounds [v], [ʃ], [ʒ], [dʒ], and [t∫] that does not exist in Indonesian sound system. The sample was 20 students in six semester of English department. The survey was done by giving pronunciation test to the student that consists of 42 words containing related five English consonantal sounds in initial, medial, and final position. This study found phonological errors in all of the pronunciation of five English consonantal sounds in all three positions of occurrences. Students made sixteen kinds of deviations in all included the replacement of [v] with [f], the replacements of [ʃ] with [s], and [tʃ], the substitution of [ʒ] with [ʃ], [z], [s], [tʃ], [dʒ], and [g], the replacement of [dʒ] with [g], [dʒ], [tʃ], and the replacement of [t∫] with [tʃ], [k], [∫] and [dʒ]. Additionally, one particular English sound, namely the sound of voiced palatal fricative, [ʒ], creates many difficulties for students. On the other hand, English sound [ʃ], voiceless palatal fricative, creates little difficulties for students.
