But, in fact the there are several factors that initiate problems in teaching speaking. They are lack of practice in speaking, teacher still uses conventional strategy, lack of mastering the aspects of oral proficiency; fluency, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, and educational cultural difference. Furthermore, the students are lack practice in English communicating orally. To reach successfully in teaching speaking performance, three-step interview was one of the strategies which could be implemented as one of the solution. The aim of this research is investigating the positive and significant influence of using three-step interview toward students’ speaking performance at the eleventh grader of MAN 1 Metro.

This research is quantitative research that conducted at the eleventh grader of MAN 1 Metrothat involves of 40 students as the samples. The sampling tecnique was random sampling. In collecting the data, the research used test, observation and documentation. The data were analyzed by chi-square formula.The result of the data analyzed confirmed thatthe value of chi-square was 12.054. Then, the data confirmed that χ2counted(12.054) was higher than the χ2table(7.814) on the degree of significant 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected.
