- The main purpose of this research is to investigate the students’ speaking performance of SMP N 7 Metro which found in speaking performance and to know what extend the multiple-slot substitution drill technique could help the students’ learning process. The writer tries to attest that multiple-slot substitution drill technique can be one of the teaching technique to increase the students’ speaking performance. In this research,the researcher conducted classroom action research (CAR) which is done in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this research is 28 students in VIIIAclass of SMP N 7 Metro. In collecting data, the researcher used test (pre-test, post test 1 and post test 2), observation and documentation. The result of this research showed that multiple-slot substitution drill techniquehad positive role in increasing the speaking performance at the eighth gradeof SMP N 7 Metro. It can be proved by the students’average score from pre test to post test. The average score in pre test was 61.61 and in post test was 69.82 became76.07. It means that the using of multiple-slot substitution drill techniquecan increasethe students’ speaking performance at the eighth graders of the state Junior High School of 7 Metro.
