- SUMMARYStyatiErlikWidiyani.2018.TheEffectsofPairWorkonStudentsWritingPerformance.DoctoralDissertation.EnglishLanguageTeachingDoctorateProgramofStateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(1)Prof.MohammadAdnanLatiefM.A.Ph.D(2)Prof.A.EffendiKadarismanPh.D(3)Dr.SuharmantoM.Pd.KeywordsdominantpassivepairworkwritingargumentativewritingTheresearchaimstofindoutwhetherornotthereisasignificantdifferenceinwritingperformance(1)betweenstudentsworkinginthedominant-dominantpairs(DDP)andthoseworkingindominant-passivepairs(DPP)(2)betweendominantstudentsinthedominantdominantpairs(D-DDP)andthoseworkinginthedominant-passivepairs(D-DPP)(3)betweenthehighproficientstudentsworkinginthedominant-dominantpair(H-DDP)andthoseworkinginthedominant-passivepair(H-DPP)and(4)betweenthelowproficientstudentsworkinginthedominant-dominantpair(L-DDP)andthoseworkinginthedominant-passivepair(L-DPP).Sincethestudyiscarriedoutinuniversitysettingwhererandomassignmentisnotfeasiblethequasi-experimentaldesignisemployed.ThesubjectsofthestudywerethestudentsoftheEnglishDepartmentofUniversitasPGRIMadiunwhowereinthefourthsemester.Thesubjectswereformedintodominantdominantpairs(DDP)anddominant-passivepairs(DPP)basedonthesocialinteraction(mutualityandequality).Therewerethreeclassificationstodeterminethedominantandpassivestudentsnamelyfromthestudentsobservationrecordingandquestionnaire.AfterthestudentswereformedinDDPandDPPthestudentswerealsoclassifiedintohighandlowproficiency.ThecurrentstudyemployedthewritingtopicsfromtheETSasastandardizedtest.Thetopicswereargumentativeessayaboutcommunicationsandtechnology.Theindicatorsofthestudentswritingwasmeasuredbasedontheaspectofwrittenproductionofcontentorganizationgrammarmechanicsandvocabulary.Todeveloptheconsistencyofthestudentswritingperformancetheresearcheremployedinter-raterreliability.Theuseofinter-ratersweretoseewhethertheresultsofthestudentswritingwerehomogenousfrombothoftheratersandusedtoavoidtheabsolutejudgmentsonthestudentswritingtest.Descriptivestatisticsandinferentialstatisticswerechosentoanswertheresearchquestions.Independentt-testwasemployedtoanswertheresearchquestionswhetherornottherewassignificantdifferenceinthemeanscoresbetweendominant-dominantpairs(DDP)anddominant-passivepairs(DPP).ItwascarriedoutbyusingSPSS17.0version.Theresultsshowthatfirstthestudentswhoworkinthedominant-dominantpairs(DDP)performsignificantlybetterinargumentativeessaywritingthanthestudentswhoworkinthedominant-passivepairs(DPP).Secondlythewritingperformanceofthedominantstudentsinthedominant-dominantpairs(D-DDP)andthedominantstudentsinthedominant-passivepairs(D-DPP)isnotsignificantlydifferent.Itindicatesthatthedominantstudentsperformverycloseinargumentativeessaywritingforbothofthetwodifferentgroupsofpairs.Thirdlythewritingperformanceofthehighproficientstudentsworkinginthedominant-dominantpairs(H-DDP)andthoseworkinginthedominant-passivepairs(H-DPP)issignificantlydifferent.Itindicatesthatthestudentsproficiencyaffectsthestudentsargumentativeessaywriting.Fourththedominantstudentsandthehighproficientstudentsinthedominant-dominantpairs(H-DDP)performbetterinargumentativeessaywritingthanthehighdominantstudentsinthedominantpassivepairs(H-DPP).Furthermorethelowproficientstudentswhoworkinthedominantdominantpairs(L-DDP)andthosewhoworkinthedominant-passivepairs(L-DPP)arenotsignificantlydifferentinargumentativeessaywriting.Itindicatesthatthelowproficientstudentsinbothofthetwogroups(DDPandDPP)havethesameargumentativeessaywritingperformance.Finallythefourresearchresultsaboveleadtoonebigconclusionthehigherthedegreeofstudentsdominanceinpairworkandthehigherthequalityofbidirectionalfeedbackthehigherthelevelofwritingperformance.Alternativelyaneffectivetypeofpairworkinessaywritingispairworkwithhighdegreeofdominanceandhigh-qualitybidirectionalcorrectivefeedbackSincetheresultsofthestudyshowsthatdominant-dominantpairs(DDP)isbetterthandominantpassivepairs(DPP)thelecturershouldinstructthedominantstudenttocontrolandhelpthepassivestudentstoachievegoodwritingperformance.Thedominantstudentsarerecommendedtocontroltheirpeersingivingfeedbackoneanother.Furthermoreitwouldbealsoinsightfultoreplicatethisstudywithdifferentmethodofclassifyingthestudents.
