- ABSTRACTAhmadinDimjati.2008.SemanticandStylisticAnalysesofJuz-AmmaoftheHolyQuranEnglishTranslationbyA.YusufAliT.B.IrvingandN.J.Dawood.Dissertation.TheEnglishLanguageEducationGraduateProgramStateUniversityofMalang.Advisers(I)Prof.H.M.AdnanLatiefM.A.Ph.D.(II)A.EffendiKadarismanM.A.Ph.D.(III)Dr.NurulMurtadhoM.Pd.KeyWordsSemanticandStylisticAnalysestheMethodsofTranslationused.TheWayA.YusufAliT.B.IrvingN.J.DawoodTranslateJuz-AmmaoftheHolyQuranfromArabicintoEnglish.ThepresentstudyanalyzesthetranslationofJuz-AmmaoftheHolyQuranfromArabic(sourcelanguage)toEnglish(targetlanguage)byA.YusufAliT.B.IrvingandN.J.Dawood.SpecificallythestudydealswiththefollowingquestionshowdothetranslatorspreservelexicalsententialdiscoursalandspeechactmeaningsandhowdotheypreservelanguagestyleandaspectsofstylisticsaswellasappropriatetranslationmethodsusedThisresearchusestextanalysisaswellasqualitativeresearchdesigninthedataanalyses.Relatedtotextanalysisequallydifferenttypeoftexthavetobeunderstoodinthecontextoftheirconditionofproductionandreading.SincetheproducerofJuz-AmmastextisGod(AllahSWT)andJuz-AmmaispartofheHolyQuraninunderstandingthetextofthisstudythecriteriaincomprehendingtheHolyQuran(discussedonp.109)istobeinvolved.ToanswerthequestionsthepresentresearcherobjectivelyandsystematicallyidentifiesthefeaturesofthetranslationofJuz-AmmaoftheHolyQuranfromArabicintoEnglishstatedabove.Relatedtolexicalmeaningsthetranslatorsinvolvesynonymyantonymyhomonymyhyponymyconnotativedenotativeandfigurativemeaningsambiguityandvagueness.Besidescollocationorplacingwordshavingmeaningrelationshipisoftenmadeinsimilarsurroundingi.e.inthesamesurah.Thecollocationoftenincludesalmostsimilarwordsorwordsthatrelatetoeachother.Thealternativeusesofthesewordscontributetolexicalcohesionandaccordinglyfacilitatereaderscomprehension.Concerningwithsententialmeaningsthethreetranslatorsretainappropriatenessofwordandsentencechoicestogainacceptabilitygrammaticalityandmeaningfulnessaswellasanalyticandsyntheticsentenceentailmentpresuppositionandlogicaltruth.Inadditiontheyalsomakeuseoffivetypesofcohesion.Atthediscoursallevelthetranslatorsmaintainthecohesionusingpronouns(Imemyyouyourhehishimtheythemtheirititsetc.)substitutionellipsesappropriaterelatingconjunctionandparticles(andbutforsoyetthereforethatwhichwhowhosoeverifasifwhenwhateverwhereaswhileetc.).Thetranslatorsalsocreateexophoricrelationshipwheretheirinterpretationliesoutsidethetextinthecontextofsituationandendophoricrelationsthatdoformcohesivetieswithinthetext.Endophoricrelationstheyuseareoftwokindsthosewhichlookbackinthetextfortheirinterpretationarecalledanaphoricrelationsandoneswhichlookforwardinthetextoftheirinterpretationarecalledcataphoricrelations.Toachievepoeticbeautytheyalsotendtoselectverseparagraphsusecombinationofformalinformalcolloquialandhypotacticstyle.Aswelltheyuseadequateaspectsofstylisticdevicestocreatecommunicativesemanticandpoetictranslation.ItisinterestingtonotethatthethreetranslatorshardlyrelaterelevantpartsoftheirEnglishtranslationsofJuz-AmmaoftheHolyQurantorelevantHadithoftheProphetMuhammads.a.waswellasotherversesneededtoberelatedthissituationisdifferentfromwhathadbeencarriedoutbyAs-ShiddieqywhenhechairedateamtranslatingtheHolyQuraninArabictoIndonesianinwhichlocutionaryillocutionaryandperlocutionaryactsbecauseofQorbecauseofMaremaintainedintheirintroductionoftheirIndonesiantranslationtheygaveclearexplanationofsituationsubstancefoundincertainverses.SodespitethesuccessofthetranslatorsinseveralrespectsthetranslatorsseemtofailtocopewithmeaningsinrelationtospeechactsasAs-Shiddieqidid.ThereforeitissuggestedthatthetranslatorsofJuz-AmmaoftheHolyQuranincludelocutionaryillocutionaryandperlocutionaryactbecauseofQaswellaslocutionaryillocutionaryandperloctutionaryactbecauseofMifitisnecessaryintheirEnglishtranslationofJuz-AmmaoftheHolyQuraninorderthattheirEnglishtranslationofJuz-AmmaoftheHolyQuranismorebeneficialforthosewhointendtoknowtheteachingoftheHolyQuranappropriatelyandcorrectly.
