  • AbstrakBasedontheresearchersexperiencesinteachingwritingparagraphsandtheresultofself-evaluationatEnglishEducationStudyProgramthestudentsachievementinwritingparagraphswasunsatisfactory.Somemainproblemsrelatedtocontentorganizationwordchoicesentencestructuregrammarusageandmechanicswereencounteredbythestudents.Toovercomethesehandicapstheresearcherproposedoneoftheappropriateapproachestoteachingwritingthatistheprocess-basedapproach.Thisstudywasdesignedtoimprovetheabilityofthestudentsinwritingdescriptiveparagraphsthroughtheprocess-basedapproach.Thisapproachwasselectedbecauseitcouldencouragethestudentstobemoreactivelyinvolvedinthestepsofthewritingprocess.TheresearchproblemwasformulatedasfollowsHowcantheabilityofthestudentsofEnglishEducationStudyProgramofFKIPTadulakoUniversityinwritingparagraphsbeimprovedthroughtheprocess-basedapproachTheresearchdesignwasCollaborativeClassroomActionresearchinwhichtheresearcherandhiscollaboratorworkedtogetherinconductingthisstudy.Theresearcheractedasthelecturerandwritinglecturerbecametheresearcherscollaboratortoobservetheimplementationofthisapproach.Itwasconductedintwocyclesbyfollowingtheproceduresoftheactionresearchplanningimplementingobservingandreflectingtheaction.Eachcyclecomprisedthreemeetings.Thefirstmeetingwasonprewritingandwritingthefirstdraft.Thesecondmeetingwasonrevisingandediting.Thethirdmeetingwasonwritingthefinaldraft.Thedataofthisstudyweregatheredthroughthefollowinginstruments-observationchecklistfieldnotesquestionnairesandstudentsworksheetoffinalwriting.ThesubjectsofthisstudywerethesecondsemesterstudentsofEnglishEducationStudyProgramofFKIPTadulakoUniversityin2008/2009AcademicYear.Thisstudyinvolved29students27ofthemwereactiveduringthisstudybecausetwoofthemweresick.Thefindingofthestudyindicatedthattheprocess-basedapproachwassuccessfulinimprovingtheabilityofthestudentsinwritingparagraphs.Theimprovementcouldbeseenfromtheincreaseofthestudentswritingmeanscoresfrom19.04(63.46)inthefirstcycleto25.37(84.57)inthesecondcycle.Inadditionitshowedthattherewasanincreaseoftheiractiveparticipationfrom56.82%inthefirstcycleto84.09%inthesecondcycleinthewritingprocess.Thefindingsofthisstudyrevealedthattheappropriateapproachinteachingwritingencompassesthefollowingprocedures.Firsttheprewritingstepwasdonetogetoutandorganiseideasbyclusteringtheideasintheclusteringlistandoutliningtheclusteredideasintheoutlininglist.Secondthestepofwritingthefirstdraftwasexcecutedtoexploretheideasintheoutlininglistintowritingseveralsentencestodevelopthecentraltopic.Thenthesentenceswereorganizedtoformthethreemainpartsofaparagraphatopicsentencesupportingsentencesandaconcludingsentencebyusingtransitionalordersignals.Therevisingstepwasadministeredtoidentifyandcorrecttheparagraphcontentandorganizationthroughself-/peerrevising.Fourththeeditingstepwasdonetoidentifyandcorrecttheincorrectsentencestructurewordchoicegrammarusageandmechanics(spellingspunctuationsandcapitalizations)throughself-/peerediting.Fifththestepofwritingthefinaldraftwascarriedouttorewritetherevisedandeditedfirstdraftintothefinaldraftbyhandwritingandcomputer-typing.Basedonthefindingsitissuggestedthatlecturersofwritingparagraphscanapplytheproceduresofthestepsoftheprocess-basedapproachiftheyfoundproblemsthatarealmostsimilartotheproblemsinthisstudy.ThenitissuggestedthattheheadofEnglishEducationStudyProgramatthisfacultycanmakeapolicyindevelopingeducationqualitybyconductingdisseminationoftheproceduresofthisapproachforthelecturersofWritingIIcourse(writingparagraphs)andhavingthemapplythisapproachtoteachingthiscourse.Moreoverfurtherresearchersaresuggestedtoconducttheirclassroomactionresearchusingthisapproachtoimprovetheabilityofstudentswhohavethesameproblemsasinthisstudyinothertypesofparagraphssuchasnarrativeexpository
