  • GraduatePrograminEnglishLanguageTeaching.StateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(1)Prof.AliSaukahM.A.Ph.D.(2)Dr.MirjamAnugerahwatiM.A.KeywordswritingChunktechniquehortatoryexpositionclassroomactionresearch.Writingisathinkingprocessofputtingideasdownonpaperstotransformthoughtsintowordstosharpenmainideastogivethemstructureandcoherentorganization(Brown2001336).WritingisplacedasanessentialparttogetherwiththeotherthreeskillsintheTeachingEnglishasaForeignLanguage(TEFL)Curriculum.WritingbecomesthemostdifficultandcomplicatedaspectinlearningEnglish.Accordingtothequestionnairesgiventothestudentsinthepreliminarystudyitwasfoundthatmostofthemhavedifficultiesinrememberingthegenericstructureofhortatoryexpositiontextduetothemanytexttypestheylearnedandrememberedincludingtheirsocialfunctionandgenericstructure.Inadditiontheyalsofounddifficultiesinrememberingsomeconjunctionswhichtakeimportantrolesinconnectingandorganizingargumentssupportingtheissuediscussedandalsogivingrecommendationsdealingwiththeissuediscussedinhortatoryexpositiontext.TheuseofchunktechniquethroughGenreBasedApproachisproposedtobeappliedintheteachingofwritingintheclassroomInordertosolvestudentsproblemsinwritingactivity.Thestrategyischosenundertheconsiderationsincechunkisthetechniqueoftakingsmallerobjectsandgroupingthemintolargerobjectssotheycanbemoreeasilyremembered.Chunkreferstoastrategyformakingmoreefficientuseofshort-termmemorybyrecodinginformation.TheresearchdesignimplementedinthisstudyisClassroomActionResearch(CAR)becauseitdealswiththeclassroomsettingandisintendedtodevelopastrategytosolveproblemsfoundbytheteacherandstudentsintheclassroom.Thisstudyconsistsoffourstagesnamelyplanningtheactionimplementingtheactionobservingtheimplementationoftheactionandreflection.ThesubjectsofthisstudyarethestudentsofXID1studentsofSMAN2Malangin2011-2012academicyear.TheinstrumentsusedincollectingthedataarequestionnaireandtheinterviewguidethroughtheclassroomteachertheobservationchecklistfieldnotesandthewritingtestattheICoTstage.Themainactivitiesduringtheteachingandlearningprocessbasedonprocess-genrebasedapproachareBuildingKnowledgeofField(BKoF)ModellingofText(MoT)JointConstructionofText(JCoT)andIndependentConstructionofText(ICoT).AfterpracticinghowtousechunktechniqueinproducinghortatoryexpositiontextcollaborativelythestudentswrotehortatoryexpositiontextindependentlyinICoTstage.Theirfinalwritingisthenassessedusingscoringrubricandastheirfinalproducts.Thisstudywasconductedthrough1cyclesincebasedonthefindingsofthestudy96.96%ofthestudentscouldachievethescoreatleast70astheminimumpassinggradeintheirfinalproducts.Itmeantthatthecriteriaofsuccessobtainedhavebeenachieved.Thustheresearcherdidnotneedtocontinuetheactiontothenextcycle.Inadditionfromthefindingsofthestudyitwasfoundthat(1)thestudentswereactivelyandenthusiasticallyinvolvedintheteachingandlearningactivitiesthroughtheimplementationofchunktechniqueinwritinghortatoryexpositiontextthestudentspercentageintheinvolvementoftheteachingandlearningprocessgained92.5%point(2)thenumberofthestudentswhoachievedthescorebelowtheminimumpassinggradedecreasedfrom27students(81.82%)inthepreliminarystudyto1student(3.03%)inCycle1.Meanwhilethenumberofthestudentswhocouldobtainthescoreatleast70asrequiredbytheminimumpassinggradegreatlyincreasedfrom6students(18.18%)inthepreliminarystudyto32students(96.96%)inCycle1(3)allthestudentshadpositiveresponsestowardstheimplementationoftheuseofChunktechniquefeaturestohelpthemwritehortatoryexpositiontextintermsofitspracticalityinhelpingtheminunderstandingandrememberingconjunctionsandalsoinorganizingideas.Basedonthefindingsofthestudyitissuggestedthatitcanbeusedasoneofthereferencestoconducttheteachingofwritingmoremeaningfullybygivingstudentschancetoexperiencewritingprocesstoproduceapieceofwriting.ForotherEnglishteachersthefindingsofthisstudycanbeusedasoneofthealternativestosolvethesameproblemstheyhaverelatedtotheteachingofhortatoryexpositiontext.Inadditiontheycanusethisstudyasareferencetovarytheactivitiesinteachingwritingsothatthestudentswillbemoremotivatedandexcited.FurthermoreEnglishteacherscanalsointegratetheuseofChunktechniqueinanypartoftheprocessofteachingandlearningEnglish(readingwritingandlistening)asthemediatomakelearningandteachingEnglishmoreinteresting.
