- Thesis.GraduatePrograminEnglishLanguageEducationStateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(1)Prof.AliSaukahM.A.Ph.D.(2)Prof.Moh.AdnanLatiefM.A.Ph.D.KeywordsReadingComprehensionReciprocalteachingmethodself-monitoringactivities.Comprehensioninreadingactivityisnotonlydecodingsymbolsintosoundsbutitalsomakesareaderconstructthemeaningwhileinteractingwiththeprintedpage.Basicallyreadingcomprehensionisnotasasingleskillinpronouncingskilleventhoughitisasacombinationmanyskillsthatleadstothederivationofmeaning.Moreoverwithoutunderstandingreadingdoesnotmeananything.Thusareadercanbemeantsuccessincomprehendingtextwhentheunderstandingandgettingthemeaningoccurredin.TheteachingofreadingthatmerelyemphasizedoncomprehendingthetextratherthanteachinghowtoreadwithingoodpronounciationhadpracticallyheldupthesecondsemesterstudentsofIslamicEducationDepartment(PAI)atSTAIBahrulUlumJombangintheacademicyear2009/2010.Thestudyisfocusedontheimplementationofthereciprocalteachingmethodtoimprovestudentsreadingcomprehensionandlearningparticipation.Thestudentsfoundmanyproblemsinreadingcomprehensionsuchasincomprehendingthemessageingivingthecorrectanswerbesideslowmotivationandreluctancetoreadandlackofvocabulary.ThustoovercometheseclassroomproblemstheReciprocalteachingandlearningprocessisimplementedbyapplyingthefourstrategiesofpredictingquestioningclarifyingandsummarizinginreadingexpositorytexts.Thefourstrategiesteachthestudentstobethestrategicreadersandabletobeself-monitoringontheirunderstandingthetext.Thereciprocallearningactivitiessetthemtobeindependentreadersthoughtheteacherisnotamongthem.Furthermoreinreciprocalteaching-learningprocessthestudentsareencouragedtosummarizethecontentofwhattheyreadthenmakethemgeneratethequestionstofindoutthemainideaofthepassageclarifyanythinginthepassagewhichisnotunderstandableandpredictaboutthetopicofthetext.Theclassroomactionresearch(CAR)isintendedtoknowhowthemethodcanimprovestudentsreadingcomprehensionandtheirinvolvement.Theresearchfindingsshowthepositiveimprovementofbothstudentsreadingachievementandinvolvementinreciprocalteaching-learningprosess.Wheretheachievementgainshowsencouragingupshotasindicatedbytheincreaseofthestudentsreadingscorestartingfromthepreliminarystudythat14studentswhogottheminimumscoreof65graduallydecreasedintosevenstudentsincycle1.Andincycle2therearethreestudentsgotscore65and22studentsachievedgreaterthan65points.Sointhisstudythereciprocalteachingmethodsucceedsimprovingstudentsabilityinreadingcomprehension.Becauseasthecriteriaofsuccesseachstudentisabletoachievethereadingscore65andgreaterthan65.Inregardwiththestudentsparticipationintheteachingandlearningprocessinthetwocyclessixmeetingsoftheresearchtheanalysisofobservationfieldnotesandquestionnairedatademonstratedpositiveresultinthateachstudentisgettingmoreactiveinteractiveinterestandmotivatedinvolvinginthelearningprocess.Inconclusionthestudentsoflowlevelproficiencyasthemajoritygroupintheclasshavedemonstratedapositiveimprovementofachievementandlearningparticipationwithinsixmeetingsbutnotforthehighproficientstudentswholooklessenthusiasminthesecondcycleoftheresearchduetotheirboredomonrepetitivestrategies.SoitissuggestedtoEnglishteacherstofindanewwaywhichiscollaboratedwithfourstrategiesinreciprocallearningprocesstodeveloptheirstudentsreadingskill.Forinstancethereciprocalteachingmethodisadaptedbycombiningitsproceduresorinstructionsinmorechallengingtasksandbyselectingtheappropriateinstructionandreadingmaterialwithinstudentspurpose.AndforfurtherrecommendationdevelopmentofappropriateprocedureofReciprocalteachingmethodinanotheractionresearchcanbeconductedwiththediversityofreadingmicroskillsandthevarietyofchallengesfordifferentlevelofproficiencyinordertoreduceboredomwhileexperimentalresearchcancomparetheeffectivenessofthismethodtoothersintheimprovementofESPlearnersreadingcomprehensioninlearningEnglish.
