- PrograminEnglishLanguageTeachingStateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(1)Dr.SuharmantoM.Pd.(2)Prof.M.AdnanLatiefM.APh.D.KeywordsSMARTstrategyimprovementreadingcomprehension.Theteachingofreadingcomprehensionplayssignificantrolesinleadingourstudentstheunderstandingofwrittentexts.Thoseunderstandingsimplythattheobjectiveofteachingreadingcomprehensionshouldbehelpingstudentstodevelopallofthereadingcomprehensionskills.Theteachingtechniquesandstrategiesshouldbedirectedtoachievingthoseobjectives.StudentsdifficultyincomprehendingthetextbecomesthecaseinMTsNBantarwaru.Itimpliesthatthestudentsreadingachievementisyetunsatisfactory.Inthepreliminarystudytheresearcherfoundthatthestudentsreadingachievementisstillundertheminimumpassinglevel.ThereforethisresearchisdesignedtoimprovethestudentsreadingcomprehensionthroughtheuseofSMARTstrategy.InaSMARTactivitystudentsarerehearsedtocomprehendatextwiththeprocedureof(1)readingatextfastandsilently(2)placingcheckmark(61692)orquestionmark()nexttoeachparagraphthatcontainssomethingunderstoodornot(3)modelinghowtoparaphraseeachparagraph(4)translatingandtroubleshooting.TheresearchappliesacollaborativeclassroomactionresearchdesigninwhichtheresearcherandthecollaborativeteacherworktogetherinpreparingasuitableprocedureofSMARTstrategydesigningthelessonplandeterminingthecriteriaofsuccessimplementingtheactionobservationanddoingreflection.Thesubjectsofthisresearchwere35ninthyearstudentsofMTsNBantarwaruMajalengkaWestJavaintheacademicyearof2010/2011.Thisresearchwasconductedin2Cycleseachofwhichcomprisesfourmeetings.Thedataofthisresearchwereobtainedthrough(1)observationsheetdesignedtoobtaininformationaboutteachersandstudentsactivitiesandperformanceduringtheimplementationofSMARTstrategy(2)fieldnotesarrangedtonotethedatabeyondthecoverageoftheobservationsheetand(3)testdevisedtoidentifywhetherthestudentsmakeprogressinreadingcomprehension.TheresearchshowsthattheimplementationofSMARTstrategyintheteaching-learningofreadingcomprehensioncanimprovethestudentscomprehensionskill.Itcanbeidentifiedthataftertheimplementationoftheactiontherewasanimprovementonthenumberofstudentswhoobtainedthegainatleast10infirstCyclewas30studentsoutof35students(85.71%).Ithadnotfulfilledthecriteriaofsuccessyet.Incycle2thestudentswhogotthegainatleast10wereallof35students(100%).Ithadfulfilledthecriteriaofsuccessintermofthescoreimprovement.MoreoverthefindingindicatedthatSMARTstrategywassuccessfultoenhancestudentsmotivationtobeactivelyinvolvedintheinstructionalprocess.Theimprovementonthestudentsparticipationwas75%inCycle1and87%inCycle2.BasedonthefindingsabovesomesuggestionsforEnglishteachersandfutureresearchersaremadeasfollowsfortheEnglishteacherswhohavesimilarproblemitissuggestedthattheyimplementSMARTstrategyasoneofthealternativesforimprovingstudentsreadingcomprehension.ForthefutureresearchersitissuggestedthattheyconductthesameresearchinotherlevelofstudywithdifferentsubjectssettingandothertexttypestoseewhetherSMARTstrategyisalsoapplicableandeffectivetoimprovethestudentsreadingcomprehension.
