- Thesis.GraduatePrograminEnglishLanguageEducationStateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(1)Prof.BambangYudiCahyonoM.PdM.APh.D.(2)Dr.SriRachmajantiM.Pd.Dip.TESL.KeywordsListeningAchievementExtensiveListeningActivityPodcast.TheteachingofInterpretiveListeningintheEnglishDepartmentofStateUniversityofMalangtrainsstudentstolistentoaudiotapedlisteningmaterialsansweroptionalcomprehensionquestionsontheListeningtextbookanddiscussthequestions.Theresearcherfindsoutthatthestudentsfinddifficultiesinunderstandingnativespeechesorutteranceswhichcausethedifficultytoansweranddiscussthequestions.Moreoverthestudentsstatedthattheyneedmoretimetoimprovetheirlisteningachievementandtheyfinddifficultiestofacilitatethemselveswithappropriateandinterestinglisteningmaterials.ToovercometheseproblemstheExtensiveListeningActivitycombinedwithpodcasttheInternet-basedlisteningmaterialwasappliedincollaborativeactionresearch.ThisresearchwasintendedtoknowhowtheExtensiveListeningActivityusingpodcastcanimprovelisteningachievementofthestudents.ThetechniquerequiredthestudentstolistentochosenlisteningPodcastmaterialtoanswertheextensivelisteningworksheetsandtodiscusstheactivitiesinFacebooknote.Thelisteningachievementthatwasspecificallyimprovedwastheabilitytounderstandnativespeechesandtocomprehendmainideasandmessagesinatextandtoimprovestudentslisteninginvolvement.Theresearchfindingsshowedthepositiveimprovementofbothachievementandactivityinvolvementinthemajorityofthestudents.Theachievementgainofthestudentsdisplayedpositiveresultsasindicatedbytheincreaseofmeanscorewhichwas62.5inthepreliminarystudyandsteadilyincreasedto87.5inCycle1and91.25inCycle2revealingthatalmostallthestudentsscoredabove75out100points.ItmeansthatCycle2hadsuccessfullyverifiedtheresultandfindingsinCycle1.InregardwiththestudentsparticipationintheprocessofExtensiveListeningActivitytheanalysisofstudentsinvolvementobservationstudentslisteningworksheetsanswerandquestionnairedatademonstratedpositiveresultsinthatthestudentsparticipateactivelyduringtheExtensiveListeningActivityprocess.TheimprovementofthelisteningachievementcouldbeseenthroughthestudentsparticipationintheExtensivelisteningactivityprocessintwocyclesthedataobtainedfromstudentsinvolvementobservationandquestionnaireshowedpositiveresults.ThestudentsinvolvementinthefirstandsecondcyclesofExtensivelisteningactivitygraduallyimproved.ItshowedthatthestudentswereenthusiastictoimprovetheirlisteningachievementthroughtheExtensivelisteningactivityusingpodcastmoreoverthediscussioninFacebooknotesmadesomethingdifferentandtheycouldsharetheircommentsideasandopinionsinvirtualworld.Itisconcludedthatthestudentshadsuccessfullyimprovedtheirachievementintermsofunderstandingnativespeechesandtocomprehendmainideasandmessagesinatextandtheirlearningparticipationintermsofactiveandpositiveengagementinlearningprocess.BytheendofCycleoneandCycletwothestudentsespeciallytheweak-abilityandlessinvolvedgroupgainedsignificantimprovementintheachievementreflectingthattheprocessoflearninghadeffectivelytouchedthemaincausesoftheirlisteningdifficulties.SincetheextensivelisteningactivityispackagedwithpodcasttheInternet-basedlisteningmaterialEFLteachers/lecturersandthestudentsaresuggestedtobefamiliarwiththeusageofInternetwebsitesandothervirtualworldsmultimediasuchasFacebookande-mail.Extensivelisteningactivitywithpodcastscanbeanindependentlearningstrategytoimprovestudentslisteningachievement.TheycanselectanypodcastmaterialsfromthepodcastwebsiteaddressesandsharethepodcastwiththeirfriendsthroughFacebookTwitterorothersocialcommunitywebsites.
