  • EnglishLanguageEducationGraduateProgramStateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(I)Dr.YazidBasthomiM.A.(II)Prof.Drs.BambangYudiCahyonoM.PdM.APh.D.KeywordsspecificusesemanticrelationWordNetconcordanceapplication.StudyingwordsthroughWordNetisaneffectivetechniquebecausewordsinWordNetaresystematicallyarrangedthroughoutthemeaningsrelationamongthedifferentwords.ThistechniquewillhelptheEnglishteachersfindtheappropriateandthecorrectwordstouseinconveyingtheirmessagessincethemeaningsrelationinWordNetsettlesonwordsthatbelongtogeneralandspecificmeaninginthehierarchicalstructure.HoweverthehierarchicalstructureofwordsinWordNetanditsusageinaspecificcontextdonotprovideluciddifference.TheuseofthespecificcorpustakenfromthesametypesoftextscanhelpresolvethedifferencesandsimilaritiesofmeaningsandthewordsusageincludedinthehierarchicalstructureinWordNet.Thisthesisinvestigatesthedistinctionsoftheverbsusage(examineinvestigateandexplore)whichareemployedinthesimilarcontextstatingtheresearchpurposesofthearticleabstractsthenexaminesthedistinctionsbetweenInternationallyPublishedResearchAbstracts(IPRA)andIndonesianBasedResearchAbstracts(IBRA)andfinallyexplorestheappropriatenessoftheverbsusageonthebasisofcorpusanalysis.Thearticleabstractsasthedatainthisresearchcount1200abstractsfocusedonthecontextofeducation.Theabstractswerecollectedfrom8IBRAand7IPRAjournalsfromwhich1200abstractsweresingledoutforbothjournals.Thevolumesofthejournalswereselectedusingaconvenientsamplingsincenotallvolumesofthejournalsweretaken.Thiswasmerelyforthepracticalityofthehugenesssamplingthatshouldbetakenintoconsideration.Theanalysismethodemployedwascontentortextanalysisincludedquantitativeandqualitativeanalysis.Inthequantitativestagethetextswereanalysedonthebasisofthewordoccurrencesandthenthepercentageoftheusageswouldbeobtained.Thenextstagewasqualitativeanalysiswithwhichtheuseandthemeaningofthewordsemployedeitherinthehighestorlowestoccurrencesanditsinclinationormeaningemphasiswouldbeinterpreted.Theresultsofthestudyrevealthatquantitativelytheuseofthethreeverbsintoinfinitivesentencestructurehasdifferentpatternsinbothjournalsalthoughthereisinsignificantdifferenceoftheoccurrences.WhiletheorderofoccurrencesinIPRAisasfollowstoexploretoexamineandtoinvestigateinIBRAtoinvestigatetoexploreandtoexamine.InMainVerbssentencestructureIPRAshowssimilarpatternsasinIBRAwiththefollowingorderexaminesexploresandinvestigates.ThepercentageofverbusagesbetweenIPRAandIBRAshowsdifferencesIPRAusesexamine/s/d(43%)explore/s/d(31%)andinvestigate/s/d(26%)whileIBRAusesinvestigate/s/d(36%)examine/s/d(33%)andexplore/s/d(31%).InthequalitativeanalysistheMainVerbssentencestructureofIPRAshowsthatthesentencesareconstructedinmoreeffectiveanddirectedsincetheydonottakemuchbe(auxiliaryandsupportingverbs)andcollocatewithpurpose.Fromthisanalysisitisfoundthattherearesimilaritiesanddifferencesintheuseofexaminesinvestigateandexplore.InIPRAthethreeverbsareusedinterchangeablyinthecontextsormeaningsofRelationshipInfluenceandEvaluation.Howeverexaminegivesaspecialemphasismeaningwhichreferstoevaluationandmeasurementortestingthegivenfactswhileexploreemphasizesthemeaningofseekingouttheresearchcomponentswhichhavebetterormorevaluablethanothercomponentsandthelastverbinvestigateisusedtoobtainnewinformationornewcomponentsintheresearchanditwillbeidentifiedintheresearchfindings.TheimplicationofthestudyisthatasEnglishteacherstheyaresupposedtobesensitiveandawareofthesynonymouswordsofEnglishsinceEnglishlanguageisveryfamiliarwithsynonyms.Evenifsomesynonymscanbetreatedandusedinterchangeablyothersneedspecifictreatmentandusagesincetheyaredifferentincertainaspects.EnglishteacherswhoareencouragingtheirstudentstousewordsdiverselyandsynonymsproperlytoavoidgeneralizingthesynonymsaresuggestedtoapplyWordNet2.1andWordsmith5.0.
