- ABSTRACTNurdin.2009.UsingDialogueJournalstoImproveEnglishWritingSkilloftheSecond-YearStudentsatMTsNTinambungPolewaliMandarWestSulawesi.ThesisGraduatePrograminEnglishLanguageEducationStateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(1)Prof.Drs.BambangYudiCahyonoM.PdM.A.Ph.D(2)A.EffendiKadarismanM.A.Ph.D.KeywordsdialoguejournalswritingskillBasedonpreliminarystudyconductedinMTsNTinambungWestSulawesiitwasfoundoutthatthestudentsoftheschoolhadsomeproblemsinlearningwriting.TheproblemswerelowmotivationtolearninabilitytomakesentencesinEnglishanddifficultytobeginwriting.Thepossiblecausesoftheproblemswereuninterestingstrategyinteachinglimitedvocabularyandhavingnoideatowrite.ThisstudywasdesignedtoimprovethestudentswritingskillinEnglishthroughdialoguejournalstrategy.Thestrategywasselectedforsomereasons.Firstofalldialoguejournalstrategyprovidesthestudentsaninterestingactivityinwhichthestudentscanfreelywriteanythingtheylikesuchasideasthoughtorfeelings.Thestudentscanalsocommunicatewiththeteacherthroughwritingbecausetheteachergivesresponsestothestudentswriting.Inadditionbywritingjournalsthestudentshavealotofpractices.Sotheyareexpectedtowritewellbecauseoftheregularwritingactivities.TheresearchproblemwasformulatedasfollowsHowcandialoguejournalsimproveEnglishwritingskillofthesecond-yearstudentsatMTsNTinambungPolewaliMandarWestSulawesiThisstudyemployedaclassroomactionresearchdesigninwhichtheresearcherandthecollaborativeteacherworkedtogetherindesigningthelessonplansimplementingtheactionobservingandmakingreflection.Thesubjectsofthestudywerethesecond-yearstudentsofMTsNTinambungPolewaliMandarWestSulawesiofthe2008-2009academicyear.Thisstudywasconductedintwocyclesbyfollowingtheproceduresoftheactionresearchi.e.planningimplementingobservingandreflecting.Theproceduresofimplementingdialoguejournalstrategyintheteachingandlearningprocessinthisstudywere(1)leadingthestudentstothetopicsbyaskingsomequestions(2)askingthestudentstotellaboutsomething.Forexampletheirdailyactivityortheirexperience(3)askingthestudentstowritedownwhattheyhavetoldabout(4)showingthestudentsmodelsofsentencesandparagraphs(5)askingthestudentstocomparebetweentheirsentencesandparagraphsandthemodels(6)askingthestudentstorewritetheirsentencesandparagraphs(7)showingthestudentsmodelsofdialoguejournals(8)givingexplanationaboutdialoguejournaltothestudents(9)showingthestudentslistoftopicstowriteinjournals(10)askingthestudentstowritejournalsbasedonthetopictheychooseand(11)askingthestudentstowritetheirownjournalsathome.Thefindingsofthestudyshowthatthestrategycanimprovethestudentswritingability.Theimprovementcanbeseenfromthestudentsproductsbothinquantityandquality.Itcanalsobeseenfromthestudentsfinalscores.Intermsofquantitythestudentscanwritevarioustopicswithincreasingnumberofsentencesandparagraphsineachentry.Intermsofqualitythestudentsshowsignificantimprovementinfouraspectsofwritingcontentorganizationvocabularyandgrammar.Regardingfinalscoresthenumberofstudentswhosescoresare60orhigherisincreasingfrompre-testtopost-tests.Basedonthefindingsthefollowingsuggestionsareproposed(1)theEnglishteachersaresuggestedtoapplydialoguejournalswhenteachingwritingtothestudents(2)inapplyingdialoguejournalstheteachersshouldbesurethatthestudentshavemasteredbasicvocabularyitemsandbasicconceptofsentencesandparagraphs(3)theteachershavetoshowtothestudentssomemodelsofjournals.Modelsofsentencesandparagraphsarealsoimportanttobegiventothestudentsand(4)forbeginningactivitiesindialoguejournalwritingitisnecessaryfortheteacherstoprovidethestudentswithalistoftopics.
