  • ABSTRACTSholehAgus.2008.DevelopingEnglishSyllabusfortheStudentsofInformationTechnologyDepartmentatKanjuruhanUniversityinMalang.ThesisGraduatePrograminEnglishLanguageEducationtheStateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(I)Prof.M.AdnanLatiefM.A.Ph.D.(II)Dr.ArwijatiWahyudiM.Pd.Dip.TESL.KeywordsDevelopingsyllabussyllabusInformationTechnologyDepartment.DevelopingEnglishSyllabusfortheStudentsofInformationTechnologyDepartmentisverycrucialandurgenttodobecausethereisnosyllabusspeciallydesignedtomeetthestudentsneedsandthesyllabusbeingusedhasnotyetfulfilledtherequirementsintermsofexplicitnesspragmaticandpedagogicalefficiency.Asaconsequencetheexistingsyllabusthatisdesigneddifferentlyforeverysemesterneedsrevisinganddeveloping.ThatiswhyInformationTechnologyDepartmentneedsasyllabuswithaspecificgoaltoenablethestudentstounderstandEnglishwrittentextsandtospeakrelatedtotheirfieldsofstudythatisknownasEnglishforSpecificPurpose(ESP).Thelackofasuitablesyllabusisthesignificantreasonforthewritertoconductthisstudytodesignsyllabusthatmeetstheneedsofthestudents.SincethestudentsofEnglishinInformationTechnologyDepartmentneedspeakingandreadingskillsitisnecessarytodevelopanEnglishsyllabusfortheskills.TheproblemofthisstudyisThereisnoEnglishsyllabusthatisspeciallydesignedbasedontheneedsofthestudentsofInformationTechnologyDepartmentofKanjuruhanUniversityofMalang.Thisstudyusesresearchanddevelopmentwiththeprocedureoflanguageprogramdevelopment.TheresearchwasdoneintheInformationTechnologyDepartmentofKanjuruhanUniversityofMalanginAprilMayandJune2007inwhichtheparticipationofthestudentsthealumniandtheEnglishteacherswereinvolved.Theresearchusedquestionnaireandinterviewastheinstrumenttocollectthedata.Inthisstudythesyllabusisdevelopedusingtheeducationalresearchanddevelopment(RandD)followingeightstages(1)conductingtheneedssurvey(2)determiningthegoalandobjectivesofthecourse(3)selectingthesyllabustype(4)writingtheprotosyllabus(5)writingthepedagogicalsyllabus(6)verifyingwiththeexperts(7)tryingouttheproductand(8)revisingTheproductofthisstudyisanEnglishSyllabusforspeakingandreadingskillandinstructionalmaterialasthemodelsforlessonplan.Thesyllabusconsistsofstandardcompetencetopicsbasiccompetence(corematerial)indicatorsteachingandlearningactivitiesmethodsandmediaassessmenttheallottedtimeandsourcesofthematerials.Theproposedsyllabusconsistsof16topicsdividedinto8topicsforspeakingand8topicsforreading.Theteachingmethodsareselectedtomotivatestudentstospeakbyusingquestionandanswerdrillsroleplayrepetitionpairandgroupworkandpresentation.Methodsforreadingactivitiesarelecturingclassroomdiscussionandpairworkdiscussion.Themediausedaretextbookwhiteboardprojectorandmultimediaroom.SincetheteachingandlearningprocessofEnglishinInformationTechnologyDepartmentislimitedtotwosemestersitissuggestedthattheinstitutionusesthissyllabusastheguidelinetodeveloptheteachingmaterialtomeetthestudentsneed.InstitutionshouldgivestudentsmorefacilitiestolearnEnglishsuchasEnglishlanguagelaboratoryspecialforInformationTechnologyDepartmentwithmultimediamorebookswritteninEnglishmoredictionaries.Theinstitutiongivesadditiontimesemesterandweeklymeeting.KanjuruhanUniversityhastopayattentiontothequalityofincomingstudentsinselectiontestthatisthelearnersachievementandpassinggradehavetobestandardizedforallsubjectstestedincludingEnglishsubjectsothattherewouldbeabalancetobringpointsofteachingandlearning.
