- Englishisthelanguageusedforglobalrange.Englishisusedinnumbersofaspectssuchastechnologynewsbroadcastingandeducation.YetmasteringEnglishwillbeuselesswithoutthemasteryofspeaking.Someonessuccessinlearningatargetlanguageisfullydeterminedbyhisorherabilitytousethetargetlanguageinareallifecommunication.YetinourcountryIndonesiathereisaverylimitedchanceforthestudentstopracticetheirspeakingabilities.Astheresulttheyfinditdifficulttoimprovetheirspeakingabilities.ThereforesomeschoolsincludingSMANegeri8Malanghaveestablishedaconversationclassasthemediaforthestudentstopracticetheirspeakingskills.ThisstudywasconductedtodescribetheimplementationofteachingEnglishintheconversationclassatSMANegeri8Malang.ThereweresixvariablesincludedinthisstudynamelythekindsofclassroomactivitiesconductedintheconversationclassthekindsofrolesimplementedbytheEnglishteacherthekindsofmaterialsusedintheconversationclassthekindsofmediausedintheclassthedescriptionofthestudentsspeakingproblemsandtheirsolutionstoovercometheproblems.ThesettingofthisstudywasGradeXImajoringinIPAIwiththirty-sevenstudentsinthatclassasthesamplesforthisstudy.Thisstudyemployedadescriptive-qualitativedesign.FieldnotestheheadmasterandtheEnglishteachersinterviewguidesandthestudentsquestionnairesweretheinstrumentsusedtocollectthedataneeded.Byemployingalloftheinstrumentstherelevantdatawerecollected.Thedataarethenclassifiedbyusingtheconceptofcodingcategoriesintosixvariablesasmentionedabove.Thefindingsofthisstudywereasfollows.Thefirststorytellingwhisperinggamesstorycompletionrole-playandwatchingmovieweretheclassroomactivitiesconductedintheconversationclass.Thesecondfindingtheteacheractedasknowledgetransmitteramanagerfortheclassroomactivitiesandthecounselorforthestudentswhofacedspeakingproblems.ThethirdwasthatthematerialsusedinthisconversationclasswerethestudentsfunnyexperiencesIndonesianfolktalesargumentativetextsaboutcurrentsocialissuesinIndonesiaandaheroicmovie.Thefourthfindingwasthatawhiteboardandaheroicmoviewereusedasmediainthisclass.Thefifthfindingisrelatedtothestudentsspeakingproblems.Itwasfoundoutthat92%ofthestudentsfacespeakingproblems.Theirproblemsvariedfromlinguisticproblemsuptopsychologicalproblems.Itrevealedthat86.5%ofthestudentshadvocabularyproblems78.3%ofthemhadgrammarproblemswhile70.2percentofthestudentsfacedpronunciationproblems.46%ofthestudentsstatedthattheywereunabletounderstandothersutterancesinEnglish.Asanaddition59.5%ofthestudentsiifeltshytospeakEnglishand32.4%ofthemwerenotmotivatedtospeakEnglish.Thelastfindingshowedthestudentseffortstoovercometheirspeakingproblems.ThestrategiesusedbythestudentstodealwiththeirspeakingproblemswereparaphrasingapproximationtheuseofgesturesaskinghelpfromtheirclassmatesandtheirEnglishteacheradjustingthemessagesandtheuseofnativelanguage.BasedontheresultofthestudyitisrecommendedthattheEnglishteacherbemorecarefulinselectingthekindsofclassroomactivitiesfortheclass.Theyshouldprovidetheopportunitiesforthestudentstopracticetheirspeakingabilities.Nexttheteachershouldalsosetupafixedsyllabusalongwiththekindsofclassroomactivitiesmaterialsmediaandsuitablescoringrubrics.Asanadditionitisexpectedthathegivesfeedbackforthestudentsconcerningtotheirperformances.ToSMANegeri8MalangitisbetteriftheschoolestablishesotherprogrammestomotivatethestudentsinimprovingtheirspeakingabilitiesforexampleEnglishdayorEnglishcompetitions.Thelastsuggestionisgiventootherresearchers.Itisexpectedforthemtoconductotherstudiestoinvestigateotherelementsintheconversationclassapartfromthesixelementsabove.Anotheralternativeistotakeoneofthesixelementsaboveandconductanindepthinvestigationaboutit.
