  • ABSTRACTPristiwiEskaPraba.2008.TheStudyofComplimentResponsesbyEnglishDepartmentStudentsofStateUniversityofMalangBasedonSocialDistanceDifferences.Thesis.EnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorProf.Dr.SiusanaKweldjuM.PdKeywordsPragmaticsComplimentResponsesSocialDistanceEnglishDepartmentStudentsofStateUniversityofMalangThisthesisisapragmaticstudyaboutthecomplimentresponsesusedbyEnglishDepartmentStudentsofStateUniversityofMalanginrespondingthecomplimentsfromthreepeoplewiththreedifferentsocialdistances.Thesocialdistancehereincludesanintimatepersonanacquaintanceandastranger.ThecomplimentresponseswerecollectedusingaDiscourseCompletionTest(DCT)takenfromAlFalasi(2007).Threescenariosweredescribedinwhichtheparticipantswereexpectedtogiverespondtothecomplimentfromthespeakerondifferentoccasions.Thefirstscenariowasgivingaresponsetoacomplimentgivenbyanintimatepersonasister.Inthesecondsituationtheparticipantshadtorespondthecomplimentfromafriendasanacquaintance.Finallytheywereexpectedtorespondacomplimentfromastrangerinadepartmentstore.ThedatafoundwereplacedinoneoftheHerbertstaxonomyofcomplimentresponses(1986).Ifaresponsecouldnotbeclassifiedinthattaxonomytheresearchermarkeditasanewresponse.TheresultofthisstudyshowedthatEnglishDepartmentstudentstendedtoacceptthecomplimentsgiven.Howeverthestrategywasuseddifferently.Forexampleinrespondingtothecomplimentforastrangertheparticipantsneveraddedsomecommentbeforeorafteracceptingthecompliment.Buttheyusuallyaddedsomecommentiftheywererespondingthecomplimentsfromanintimatepersonandanacquaintance.ByusingtheacceptancestrategyitcanbeseenthattheresponsesofEnglishDepartmentstudentshavebeeninfluencedbyEnglishculturewhichsaysthattheacceptancestrategyisthemostappropriatestrategyinrespondingtothecompliments.ItcanbeconcludedalsothattheyhavealreadyhadagoodlevelofcommunicativecompetenceinrespondingtothecomplimentsgiveninEnglishsincetheyareabletousetheirabilityinadjustingtheirchoiceoflanguagebasedonculturalcontextofthesituation.Thisresearchonlyinvestigatedthecomplimentresponsesgivenbasedonsocialdistancedifferencesandthedataforthisstudywerefromaquestionnairewhichdidnotreflectthenaturallyoccurringspeech.Thereforeamoreextensivestudyisneededtocontributemoretotherealapplicationofpragmatictheory.Astudyabouttheinfluenceofsocialstatusdifferencesorothersocialfactorsinrespondingtocomplimentsmightbeinteresting.
