- ABSTRACTMashuriImam.2018.ContrastivePragmaticsComplimentResponseStrategiesofIndonesianandAmericanSpeakers.Thesis.EnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDr.EmaliaIragiliatiSukarniM.Pd.KeywordsComplimentResponsesIndonesianNativeSpeakerAmericanNativeSpeakerUnderstandingSpeechActsacrosscultureinparticularcomplimentresponsesisveryessentialnowadaysasitsavesusfromthecommunicationbreakdownduringcommunicationwithpeoplefromdifferentculturalbackground.ThusthisstudyaimsatstudyingthemajorcomplimentresponsestrategiesperformedbyIndonesianandAmericannativespeakers.MoreoveritalsoinvestigatesthedifferencesbetweenIndonesianandAmericanspeakersinperformingcomplimentresponsestrategies.Besidesittriestofindouttheunderlyingreasonsofoneinrespondingtocompliments.Thisstudyemploysadescriptivequalitativedesign.Thedatawereobtainedfromrespondentsconsistingof40participants(20Indonesianand20Americanrespondents).Questionnairewasutilizedasaninstrumenttocollectthedata.Therearetwotypesofquestionnairesused.Firstthequestionnaireisintheformofdiscoursecompletiontest(DCT)whichconsistsof12pointswheretheinformantsareaskedtorespondtocomplimentsincertainsituation.Thenthesecondquestionnairewasaimedatfindingtheunderlyingreasonswhydopeoplegiveresponsetocompliments.Inthisstudyquestionnairesweredistributedtwice.Thefirstcyclewasthetryoutwhichintendedtoensurethevalidityofthequestionnaire.Thenextcyclewasdistributingthequestionnairestothe40participantsfortheactualresultofthispresentstudy.FurthermorethedatacollectedwereanalyzedbasedonHerbertsTaxonomy(1990).Thefindingsrevealedthat(1)AppreciationtokenbecomesthemostfrequentlyusedstrategiesbyIndonesiannativespeakers(28.3%).MeanwhileforAmericannativespeakerscommentacceptance(34.6%)becomesthemajorusedstrategywhentheyarerespondingtocompliments.(2)BothAmericanandIndonesiannativespeakersemployedthestrategieswhichbelongtoagreementcategories.InotherwordseitherAmericanorIndonesiancomplimentrecipientstendtoacceptthecomplimentaryforcefromtheAddresser.(3)ForIndonesianrespondentsculturalmattersorbeingpolitetothepeoplewhogavethecomplimentaryforcetothembecomethemostchosenreasonofrespondingtocompliments(100%).WhereasfortheAmericannativespeakersHabitisthehighestchosenreasonofrespondingtocompliments(95%).ThispresentstudyofcomplimentresponsesinEnglishandIndonesiancanserveasareferencetoenrichthebodyoflinguistics.Neverthelessitisstronglyrecommendedthatfurtherstudiesbeconductedondailydiscoursesandfromthepointofviewofotherfieldespeciallysyntacticpatternofcomplimentresponsesforitsbetterment.
