- KeywordsPictorialwordPuzzlessvocabularymasteryimprovementThisresearchwasintendedtoimprovethevocabularymasteryoftheseventhgradersofLaboratoryJuniorHighSchoolofStateUniversityofMalanginreadingdescriptivetexts.Basedonthepreliminarystudy26(81.25%)outof32studentsofgradeseventhofLaboratoryJuniorHighSchoolofStateUniversityofMalanggotscorebelowtheminimumpassinggradeof75.Moreoveritalsoshowedthatthestudentsdifficultylayupontheproblemofmemorizingnewvocabulary.TosolvetheproblempictorialwordPuzzleswasappliedinvocabularylearning.Thisresearchwasclassroomactionresearch.ThesubjectswereclassVIIBinthefirstsemesterof2011/2012academicyear.ClassVII-Bconsistedof32studentswith20malesand12females.Thisresearchwascompletedinonecycle.Thecycleconsistedoffourstagesplanningtheactionimplementingtheactionobservingtheactionandreflectingtheaction.Intheplanningstagetheresearcherplannedandmadesomepreparationforthisaction.Thenheconductedavocabularytesttomeasurethestudentsvocabularymastery.NexttheresearcherobservedthesituationoftheimplementationofpictorialwordPuzzlesintheclassroom.Ittookonecycletomeetcriteriaofsuccess.Thecriteriaofsuccessforproductwasatleast75%ofthestudentspassedtheMinimumPassingGradeof75invocabularytestandforprocesswas2.Atleast80%ofthestudentsinvolvedintheteachingandlearningprocess.Inthecycletheimplementationoftheactionwassuccessfulitwasprovenbythefactthat26(81.25%)outof32studentsgotscoreaboveminimumpassinggradeof75.Thecriterionofprocesswasalsometbecausemorethan80%studentsinvolvedintheteachingandlearningprocess.Thefollowingarethepercentageofstudentsinvolvementinteachingandlearningprocessforeachmeetinginthecycle86.66%forfirstmeeting93.33%forsecondmeeting98.33%forthirdmeetingand100%forthefourthmeeting.TheprocedureswhichwereusedbytheresearcherinteachingvocabularyusingpictorialwordPuzzlesswere(1)heplayedasongatthebeginningoftheclass(2)hedistributedthehandoutsofthematerials(3)heaskedstudentstoreadthehandoutsandanswerthequestionsbasedonthetextsgiven(4)heaskedstudentstolistverbsornounsinthetextandwritethemonthewhiteboard.(5)heaskedstudentstomakegroupsofsix.Theywerelettochoosewithwhomtheyvwantedtohavegroups(6)heinformedthestudentsthathewouldgiverewardstothewinnerofeachgroupthegroupwhowonandthestudentswhogotthehighestscoreinvocabularytest(7)hegavestudents15minutestoplaythegameintheirgroups(8)hegavedifferentformsofPuzzlestoeachgrouptodeterminewhichgroupwasthewinner(9)theresearcherandthestudentsdiscussedthevocabularyusedinthegametogetherandshowedthemtheanswersofthePuzzles.BasedontheresultoftheresearchEnglishteachersofJuniorHighSchoolaresuggestedtoapplypictorialwordPuzzlesinteachingvocabularytomakethelearningactivityinterestingandfun.TheschoolprincipleissuggestedtofacilitatetheuseofpictorialwordPuzzlestoimprovethestudentsvocabularymastery.Furtherresearchersaresuggestedtoconductasimilarstudyinadifferentlevelofschoolanddifferentgenreoftext.
