  • Keywordsvocabularymasteryandpictorialwordpuzzles.ThisresearchwasintendedtoimprovethevocabularymasteryoftheeighthgradersofMTsSuryaBuanaMalanginreadingrecounttexts.Basedonthepreliminarystudy19(65.52%)outof29studentsofgradeeighthofMTsSuryaBuanaMalanggotscorebelowtheSKBMsetupbytheschoolforEnglishvocabulary.Furthermoreitalsoshowedthatthestudentsdifficultieslayupontheproblemofmemorizingnewvocabulary.Toovercometheproblempictorialwordpuzzleswereappliedinvocabularylearning.Thisresearchwasclassroomactionresearch.ThesubjectswereclassVIIIAinthefirstsemesterof2009/2010academicyear.ClassVIIIAconsistedof29studentswith13femalesand16males.Thisresearchwasconductedintwocycles.Everycycleconsistedoffourstagesplanningtheactionimplementingtheactionobservingtheactionandreflectingtheaction.Intheplanningsteptheresearcherplannedandmadesomepreparationforthisaction.Thensheconductedavocabularypre-testtomeasurethestudentsvocabularymastery.Nextsteptheresearcherobservedthesituationoftheimplementationofpictorialwordpuzzlesintheclassroom.BasedontheobservationtheresearchermadeareflectionaboutwhathappenedintheclassroomincycleI.Afterthatshere-plannedtheactivitiesthatweregoingtodoincycleII.Thecriterionofsuccesswas75%ofthestudentsgettheminimumpassinggradeof75.Theinstrumentsusedtocollectthedatawereobservationsheetsquestionnaireandvocabularyquizzes.Thedatagainedfromtheobservationsheetswereteachinglearningprocessandstudentsattitudetowardstheimplementationofpictorialwordpuzzles.Studentsresponsesontheuseofpictorialwordpuzzlesweregainedfromquestionnaire.Ittooktwocyclestomeetcriteriaofsuccess.IncycleItheimplementationoftheactionwasnotfullysuccessfulitwasprovenby19(65.52%)outof29studentsgotscoreaboveminimumpassinggradeof75.Sincethecriteriaofsuccesstoldthat75%ofstudentshadtoreachtheminimumpassinggradeof75CycleIIwasconducted.TheimplementationoftheactionwasfullysuccessfulincycleII.Thestudentsscorewasbetterandhadmetthecriteriaofsuccess.IncycleIIafterthestudentsplaypictorialwordpuzzles25(86.21%)outof29studentsgotscoreaboveminimumpassinggradeof75.Tosumupthestudentsscoreshadsuppressedthecriteriaofsuccessdeterminedbytheschool.TheincreasingnumberofstudentsgotscoreaboveminimumpassinggradeshowedthatpictorialwordpuzzleswasveryhelpfulforimprovingstudentsvocabularymasteryattheeighthgradersofMTsSuryaBuanaMalang.Theresearchfindingsshowedthattheimplementationofpictorialwordpuzzlesmakestheclassmoreactiveandalive.TheuseofpictorialwordpuzzlesduringvocabularylearningimprovesthevocabularymasteryoftheeightgradesofMTsSuryaBuanaMalang.Thepictorialwordpuzzlesmakethevocabularyiilearningmoreenjoyableandinterestingbecausestudentscanmemoriesthemeaningofthedifficultwordswithoutaskingtheirteacherorlookingthemupinthedictionaryallthetime.Theresultofobservationsheetsandquestionnaireshowedthatstudentswereinterestedinthismediabecauseitwasenjoyabletheclassatmospherebecamerelaxedandcreatedcooperationbetweenpartnerswithchallengingtask.TheresearchfindingsshowthattheusingofpictorialwordpuzzlesduringvocabularylearningcouldbeimplementedtoimprovethevocabularymasteryoftheeighthgradesofMTsSuryaBuanaMalang.ItissuggestedtotheEnglishteacherstoapplypictorialwordpuzzlestoimprovetheirstudentsvocabularymastery.Forotherresearchersitissuggestedthatthesimilarresearchcanbeconductedusingdifferentmethodologyinotherschoolsorvocationalschoolswithdifferentgenreoftext.
