  • Keywordsgenderdifferencescomplimentstrategiescomplimenttopicsocio-pragmatic.Thisthesisisasocio-pragmaticstudyoncomplimentsusedbyIndonesianLearnersofEnglishtogiveEnglishcomplimentsbasedonthecomplimenttopics(appearanceandperformance)andgenderdifferences.Fiftyrespondents(25femalesand25males)weretakenfromthestudentsofEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalangcohort2006and2007.TheywereaskedtogivecomplimentsbasedonthesituationsgivenintheDiscourseCompletionTest(DCT).TheDCTwasusedtoelicitthedataaboutaspeechactofcomplimentsfromIndonesianEnglishLearnersbasedonthecomplimenttopics(AppearanceandPerformance)andgenderdifferences.ThedatawereanalyzedusingtheclassificationofcomplimentstrategiesformulatedbyYe(1995).TheresultsofthisstudyshowthatIndonesianLearnersofEnglishemployalltypesofcomplimentstrategiesinrespondingtothesituationsgiven.SpecificallyfourtypesofcomplimentstrategiesareExplicitComplimentImplicitComplimentNoResponseandNonCompliment.FemaleandmalerespondentstendtoofferExplicitComplimentsinbothtopicswhichdifferslightlytotheassumptionthatIndonesianpeoplerarelygivecomplimentsamongother.ImplicitComplimentoccurlessfrequentlyonAppearancethanonPerformanceconsideringthatgivingcomplimentsindirectlymaycausemisinterpretation.OntheotherhandonPerformancemoremalesuseNoResponseNonComplimentandImplicitComplimentthanfemalesduetotheperceptionofIndonesiangender-inequality.Thisstudyonlyinvestigatescomplimentsbasedonthecomplimenttopics(appearanceandperformance)andgenderdifferencesingivingcompliments.Thereforefurtherstudiesinrelationtocomplimentsandwithothervariablesarerecommendedtocontributemoretopragmatictheory.Astudyaboutothersocialfactorsthatmayinfluencethepreferenceofthetypesofcomplimentsmightbeinterestingtobeanalyzed.
