  • ABSTRACTArianiNova.2010.CultureinDescriptiveTextsofEFLTextbookusedatInternationalStandardSchoolProjectSMPN5Malang.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDr.Hj.EmaliaIragiliatiM.PdKeywordsCulturalContentEFLTextbookDescriptiveTextsInternationalStandardSchoolProjectTheinevitablerelationshipbetweenlanguageandcultureisnotdisputable.TheneedforculturallearningwasstatedinthecurriculumofInternationalStandardSchoolProject.Theculturelearningfor7gradersinInternationalStandardSchoolProjectSMPN5MalangistolearntargetcultureandsourceculturewhichcanbeattainedthroughEFLtextbook.TargetcultureinthisstudyisthecultureofcountrieswhereEnglishisthefirstlanguagesuchasUnitedKingdomUnitedStatesofAmericaandAustralia.MeanwhilesourcecultureisthestudentsownculturewhichisIndonesian.ThisstudywasaimedatanalyzingthetargetandsourceculturepresentationondescriptivetextsoftheEFLTextbookusedatInternationalStandardSchoolProjectSMPN5Malangbyapplyingthecontentanalysis.TheanalysiswasbasedontheculturalcontentcriteriaofByram(1993a)inHinkel(1999).TargetculturepresentationfoundinthedescriptivetextsDeawereintheformsofa)nameofaschoolwhichisMondialLowerSecondarySchoolb)socialclasspresentationofamiddleclassinEnglish-Speakingcountries.MeanwhileinthetextVanessa-MaeVanakornwereintheformsofa)regionalidentitywhichareLondonEnglandandUnitedKingdomb)socialclasspresentationofupperclassinUnitedKingdom.Sourceculturepresentationwasnotpresentedwithinallthefourdescriptivetexts.TherewerenovocabularyusagefoundrelatedtoIndonesiansculturebasedontheculturalcontentcriteria.Inotherwordstherewasnoexplicitlanguageusagetopresentsourcecultureinthedescriptivetexts.Incarryingouttheanalysistherewerenewfindingsfound.ThefirstwasthatmostculturalinformationfromthetextstitledMyGrandmaandMyBombiwerebland.Thereforethesetwodescriptivetextscouldnotbementionedtopresenteithertargetorsourcecultureinformationbasedontheculturecontentcriteria.ThesecondnewfindingswerethepresentationsofinternationaltargetcultureinthedescriptivetextstitledVanessa-MaeVanakornandDea.TheinternationaltargetcultureisawidevarietyofculturessetinEnglish-speakingcountriesorinothercountrieswhereEnglishisnotafirstorsecondlanguagebutisusedasaninternationallanguage(CortazziJininHinkel1999).TheinternationaltargetculturepresentationsinthedescriptivetextVanessa-MaeVanakornwereintheformsofa)regionalidentitywhichwasSingaporeThailandandChinab)employmentwhichwasaworldfamousviolinistc)musicalinstrumentwhichwasviolind)musicalperformancewhichwasclassicalviolinconcerto.e)moralityshowedincarryingoutadivorceandf)ritesofpassageininterculturalmarriage.InthedescriptivetextiDeatheinternationaltargetculturepresentationwasintheformofmoralitywhichconstruedinthecharacterofniceandhelpfulsmartstudentquality.Somesuggestionsareproposedrelatedtoculturalcontentconsideration.Thefirstsuggestionisforthematerialsdeveloperwhoshoulddevelopmaterialsthatpresentculturalcontentinthereadingmaterialssuchasdescriptivetextstoprovidethestudentstolearnabouteithertargetcultureorsourcecultureinformation.ItcanbedonethroughthementionofthelanguageusagethroughtheculturalcontentcriteriabasedonByram.ThesecondsuggestionisforEnglishteacherswhowouldselectthereadingmaterialsfromtextbookthatcouldhelpthemenrichingtheirculturallearningbydiscussingthewordsorsentencewhichpresenttargetorsourceculturepresentation.Thelastsuggestionisforthefutureresearcherswhowanttoconductstudiesrelatedtotheculturalcontentanalysisontextbook.Futureresearchersaresuggestedtoprobeandinvestigatedeeperthematerialssuchastextbookinrelationtoitsculturalcontenttohelpimprovingthematerialsdevelopment.
