  • ABSTRACTPurwanitasariLili.2010.UsingComicStripstoImprovetheAbilityofStudentsofSMPNegeri2MalanginWritingRecountText.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorAnikN.WulyaniS.PdM.Pd.KeywordscomicstripsrecounttextwritingabilityWritingmaybeconsideredasthemostdifficultandcomplicatedskillamongthefourlanguageskills.NeverthelessitisshouldbemasteredbyJuniorHighSchool(JHS)students.Accordingtothequestionnairesgiventothestudentsinthepreliminarystudyitwasfoundthatthemajorproblemstheyfacedwerehowtodevelopideashowtochooseappropriatewordsandhowtowritesentencegrammaticallyandtowritespellingcorrectly.Theteacheralsonevergavemodelofhowtowriterecountbecausewritingactivitiesinclassweredominatedbyarrangingjumblesentencesandjumblewords.Tosolvetheproblemscomicstripswasintroducedtobeappliedinteachingwriting.Themediawaschosenbecauseitwaseasytoapply.Basedonpreviousstudiesitwasfoundthatthemediathatusingpicturesuchascomicstripswaseffectivetohelpstudentstodevelopandorganizeideasinwritingcomposition.Theobjectiveofthisstudywastoimprovestudentsabilityinwritingrecountwhichwasfocusedontheimprovementofthecontentlanguageuseandspelling.Thisstudyusedcollaborativeclassroomactionresearch.TheresearchertogetherwiththehelpofclassroomEnglishteacherdesignedthelessonplansandsetthecriteriaofsuccess.TheclassroomEnglishteacheractedastheobserverduringtheteachingandlearningprocesswhiletheresearchertaughtintheclass.Theresearchwasconductedintwocycles.Eachcycleconsistedoftwomeetingswhichcoveredplanninganactionimplementingtheactionobservingtheactionandreflectingontheobservation.Thesubjectswere38studentsofVIII-EinSMPNegeri2Malangin2009/2010academicyear.Theinstrumentsusedtocollectthedatawereinterviewguidesquestionnairesobservationchecklistfieldnotesandstudentsfinalproduct.Theresearcherintroducedcomicstripsduringtheimplementationoftheaction.Itwasfollowedbymodelinghowtomakeoutlinesfromcomicstripsbeforestartingwritinghowtowritethedrafthowtorevisethedraftandhowtowritethefinalproduct.Inadditionthestudentsarealsoaskedtoproducearecountcompositionthroughthewritingprocessprewritingdraftingrevisingandfinalversion.Theresultoftheresearchshowedthatcomicstripssuccessfullyimprovedthestudentsabilityinwritingrecounttextespeciallyintermsofcontentlanguageuseandspelling.ThescoresofthestudentswritingproductsimprovesignificantlyfrompreliminarystudytoCycleIandfromCycleItoCycleIIoncontentlanguageuseandspelling.Thestudentsmeanscoresoncontentimprovedfrom2.4inpreliminarystudyto2.7inCycleIanditcouldreach3.3inCycleII.Inadditionthestudentsmeanscoresonlanguageuseimprovedfrom2.2inpreliminarystudyto2.7inCycleIand3.3inCycleII.Onspellingthestudentsmeanscoresalsoimprovedfrom2.4inpreliminarystudyto2.7inCycleIand3.1inCycleII.BasedontheresultofthisstudyitissuggestedthattheEnglishteacherstousecomicstripsinteachingrecountwritingandotherkindsoftexttypes.Forthestudentsitissuggestedthattheywriteoutlinebeforewritingusingcomicstripsespeciallyingeneratinganddevelopingideasinwritingrecountcomposition.Moreoverfurtherresearchersaresuggestedtoconductresearchusingcomicstripsfordifferenttexttypesandondifferentgradesandlevelsofeducationtoseewhetherthismediawaseffectivetosolvetheproblemsofwritingornot.
