- ABSTRACTTsaqiefMuhammad.2010.AnAnalysisonActivitiesintheEnglishe-BookDevelopingEnglishCompetenciesfortheGradeXSeniorHighSchool.Thesis.EnglishLanguageEducationProgramFacultyofLetterStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDr.EnnyIrawatiM.Pd.KeywordscontentanalysisactivitiescommunicativeHumanshaveadeepneedtocommunicatewithothers.Thereforetheyneedlanguageasameansofcommunication.IndonesianpeoplearefortunatetohaveanationallanguagecalledIndonesian.ThislanguagehasbeensuccessfullyunitingthepluralityofIndonesianculture.IninternationalcontextEnglishiswidelyrecognisedasthemostlyusedlanguageacrossthecountries.ThesupremacyofEnglishspeakingcountriesinindustryandtechnologyhastriggeredthespreadofEnglish.AsaresultitisconsideredimportanttoteachEnglishinmostcountriesincludingIndonesia.Textbooksholdanimportantroleintheteachingandlearningactivities.RelatedtothatfactIndonesiangovernmenthasabigconcerntoprovidestudentsandteachersinIndonesiawithnationalstandardizedbooks.ThegovernmenthasreleasedanewprogramcalledBSE(BukuElektronikSekolah).InestablishingthisprogramthegovernmentinvitedauthorsteachersorlecturerstodeveloptextbookwhichisthenselectedbyBSNP(BadanStandarNasionalPendidikan).Howevertheresultoftheanalysishasneverbeenpublished.Thereforetheteacherswhowanttousee-bookdonotknowthestrengthandweaknessesofthee-book.Duetothatfacttheresearcherwouldliketoanalyzeoneofthee-books.Itwasexpectedthattheresultofthisstudycouldbebeneficialfortheteacherswhowillusethise-bookfortheauthorsofthise-bookandfutureresearchers.ThestudyfocusedonanalyzingtheactivitiesinEnglishe-bookforseniorhighschoolgradeXDevelopingEnglishCompetencieswrittenbyAchmadDoddyetal.Thisstudyattemptedtorevealtowhatextentactivitiesinthetextbookarecommunicative.Itwascarriedoutbydocumentingtheactivitiesineachchapterandcomparingthemwithcommunicativenesscriteriasuchasauthenticitystimulatinginteractionemphasisingonfluencyandbeyondtheclassroom.Theresultsofthestudyshowedthat24.1%activitiesinthewholetextbookareconsideredcommunicative.Itcanbeconcludedthatmostactivitiesinthetextbookareconsideredleastcommunicative.Basedonthefindingstheresearcherrecommendstheteacherswhowillusethisbooktoaddmoreactivitieswhichhavehigherdegreeofcommunicativenesssuchasjigsawinformationtransfercreatingemailaccountwriteaninvitationcardsoradapttheactivitiesinthetextbookandmodifythemforcommunicativelearning.Forthetextbookauthorsitissuggestedthattheyhavetoenrichthetextbookwithcommunicativeactivityincasetheyrevisethetextbook.Forfutureresearcheritissuggestedthattheyanalyseotheraspectsofthetextbookoruseotherinstrumentstoanalyzeit.
