  • ABSTRACTAndriyaniFransiskaDiyah.2009.IntegratingClassicalMusicandGenreBasedApproachtoImprovetheEleventhGradersSkillsinWritingNarrativeTextsatSMANegeri1Blitar.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDr.SriRachmajanti.Dip.TESL.M.Pd.KeyWordsmozartclassicalmusicgenrebasedapproachwritingskillnarrativetextsactionresearchThisstudywasintendedtoimprovetheeleventhgradersskillsinwritingnarrativetextsatSMANegeri1Blitar.BasedonthepreliminarystudymorethanhalfofthestudentsofGradeXIofSMANegeri1Blitarstillhavepoorabilityinwritingnarrativetexts.Itisconsideredpooras16outof23students(73%)gotscorebelowtheSKM(StandarKelulusanMinimum)setupbytheschoolthatis75fortheEnglishwritingskill.Basedontheobservationdonethroughthepreliminarystudyitwasfoundoutthatthestudentsdifficultieslaidupontheproblemsofhowtogenerateanideaandorganizetheideainwriting.Inadditionthestudentstendedtounderestimatetheprocessofwritingastheteacherstechniquesinwritingseemedunvaried.Toovercometheproblemanalternativestrategywasappliedintheteachingofwriting.ThestrategyappliedinvolvedtheuseofclassicalmusiccomposedbyMozart(1756-1791)andgenrebasedapproachtofacilitatethestudentsduringthewritingactivities(pre-writingdraftingrevisingeditingandpublishing)ThisstudyisaCollaborativeActionResearch.Thesubjectsofthisstudywerethe22studentsofGradeXIinthefirstsemesterof2009/2010academicyear.Theinstrumentsusedtocollectthedatawereobservationchecklistsquestionnairesfieldnotesandscoringrubric.Thedatagainedfromthestudentswritingscoreswereanalyzedbasedontermsofcontentorganizationandgrammarusagebyusingscoringrubric.Thestudentsattitudeandclassroomatmosphereweretakenfromthefieldnotesandobservationchecklists.BothstudentswritingscoreandattitudeweresupportedbytheresultofthequestionnairesofstudentsandteachersresponsesontheuseofMozartclassicalmusicandgenrebasedapproachduringthewritingactivities.Thisresearchwasconductedintwocycles.Everycycleconsistedoffourstagesplanninganactionimplementingtheactionobservingtheactionandreflectingtheaction.TheprocedureselaboratedintheteachingofwritingwereBuildingKnowledgeoftheTextsModelingoftheTextsJointConstructionoftheTextsandthelastonewasIndependentConstructionoftheTexts.TheproceduresofteachingwritingweredoneinthestageofimplementingtheactionineachCycle.TheresearchfindingsshowedthatthetechniqueofusingMozartclassicalmusicduringthewritingactivitiescouldbeimplementedtoimproveeleventhgradersskillsinwritingnarrativetextsandsolvedthestudentsproblemingeneratingideasandorganizingthem.InCycle1theimplementationoftheactionwasnotfullysuccessfulitwasprovenasthemeanscoreofthestudentswritingforallthreeaccessedcriteriadidnotmeetthecriteriaofsuccessyet.InCycle1(45%)ofthestudentsgotscorebelowtheaveragescoreintermsofcontentand(54%)ofthestudentsgotscorebelowtheaverageintermsoftheorganization.Whereasintermsofgrammarusage(41%)ofthestudentsgotscorebelowtheaverage.AsithadbeenanalyzedinthereflectionstagetheweaknessofCycle1laiduponthestudentslackofunderstandingofelementselaboratedinanarrativetext.Someofthestudentsstillfounddifficultiesinorganizingtheideasintoacompositionwhichwellservedthelexicogrammaticalfeaturesandthegenericstructuresconstructinganarrativetext.InadditionthestudentsneededlongertimetoenjoytheMozartclassicalwhilerelaxingtheirbodyandmindThisconsiderationleadstheresearchertocontinuethestudytotheCycle2.TheimplementationoftheactionwasfullysuccessfulinCycle2sincethestudentswritingperformancewasbetterandhadmetthecriteriaofsuccessdeterminedbytheresearcher.IntheCycle2afterthestudentshadbeengivensomemoreexamplesofnarrativetextsonly(18%)ofthestudentsgotscorebelowtheaveragescoreintermsofcontentand(23%)ofthestudentsgotscorebelowtheaveragescorebothintermsoforganizationandgrammarusage.Tosumupthestudentsscoreshadsurpassedthecriteriaofsuccessdeterminedbytheresearcher.ItisrecommendedthattheEnglishteachersandschoolpractitionersimplementthistechniqueintheteachingofnarrativewriting.Itisalsosuggestedthatotherfutureresearchersconductfurtherresearchconcerningtheuseofclassicalmusictoimprovethestudentsskillsinwritingtheothertexttypes(genres).Itisadvisablefortheotherresearcherstovarytheclassicalmusicandcarefullyselectkindsofmusicinvolvedinthisstrategy.Inadditiontheyarealsorecommendedtoconductresearchusingthistechniqueinothersettingsandinotherlearninginstitutionstofigureoutwhetherornotthestrategycanbeusedinordertosolvethestudentswritingsproblemsinacquiringwritingskills.
