  • ABSTRACTNurVerryArdhiana.AStudyontheImplementationofEnglishExtracurricularProgramatSMPNegeri1Malang.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorNiamikaElKhoiriS.PdM.A.KeywordsdescriptivestudyteachingEnglishEnglishextracurricularprogramSMPAlotofmaterialstobecoveredcombinedwiththelimitedtimeavailableinEnglishregularclassmadeitdifficultfortheteacherstoapplymanyinterestingandfunactivities.AsaresultthestudentsmightfeelboredandnotmotivatedbecauseofthelackoffunactivitiesinlearningEnglish.ThereforeSMPNegeri1MalangconductedEnglishextracurricularprogramwhichfunctionedasachannelforthestudentswhowantedtoimprovetheirEnglishabilitythroughtheapplicationoffunandinterestingactivitiesoutoftheschoolsregulartime.ThisstudyusedadescriptivedesignwhichwasaimedtodescribetheimplementationofEnglishextracurricularprogramatSMPNegeri1Malang.ThesubjectsofthestudyweretheheadmastertheviceheadmasterforstudentaffairstheEnglishextracurricularteachersthestudentswhojoinedtheprograminclassVII.1andVIII.2andthestudentsofclassVIICandVIIIDwhodidnotjointheprogram.Theinstrumentsusedtocollectthedatawereinterviewquestionnaireobservationanddocumentation.Thefindingsofthestudywereasfollows.Firstthefacilitiesprovidedbytheschoolwereclassroomsandlanguagelaboratory.Howeverbecauseofsomelimitationsthefacilitieswereconsideredinsufficienttosupporttheactivitiesintheprogram.Secondthemediausedintheprogramwerewhiteboardsgamescardspicturesandworksheets.Thirdthematerialsusedweredevelopedbytheteachers.SomematerialsusedintheprogramwerebiographydescriptionofsomethingexpressionsofaskingforandgivingsuggestionssimplepresenttensesimplepasttenseandconversationaboutMalangTempoeDoeloe.Fourthsomecontrolledsemicontrolledandfreetechniqueswereimplementedintheprogramsuchassettingbrainstorminginterviewcompositiongamecueddialogdialoguerecitationidentificationmini-dramastorytellingandsimpledebate.Fifthrelatedtothestudentsopinionstowardtheimplementationoftheprogramalmostallstudentssupportedtheimplementationoftheprogramintheirschool.MostoftheEnglishextracurricularstudentssaidthattheirEnglishabilityhadimprovedsincetheyjoinedtheprogram.MoreoverthestudentswhodidnotjointheprogramstatedthattheprogramwasimportanttobeimplementedintheirschooltogiveachannelforthestudentswhowereinterestedinEnglish.Finallytheproblemsintheprogramweretheclassovercapacityatthebeginningofacademicyeartheunavailabilityofprogramplansandthedifficultyofsomestudentstobeactiveinspeakingactivitybecauseofthelowselfconfidenceandlimitedvocabularymastery.BasedontheresultofthestudysomesuggestionsaregivenfortheimprovementofEnglishextracurricularprogramsquality.Firsttheprincipaloftheschoolneedstoprovidemorefacilitiesandovercometheclassovercapacityproblem.Theprincipalisalsosuggestedtoevaluatetheprogramregularlythatwillbeusefulfortheprogramimprovement.SeconditissuggestedthattheEnglishextracurricularteachersformulizetheprogramplansandusethefacilitiesavailable.Theteachersalsoneedtoconductmorevariousactivitiesintheprogram.Thirdtheresearchersuggeststheotherschoolswhichconductorhaveaplantoconductthesameprogramtohaveacarefulprogramplanwhichconsistsoftheprogramspecificobjectivesandtheprogramevaluationsystem.Theschoolsalsoneedtoprovidethesufficientfacilitiestosupporttheprogramimplementation.ThelasttheresearchersuggestsotherresearcherswhoareinterestedinconductingthesameresearchontheimplementationofEnglishextracurricularprogramtoobserveandanalyzedeeperonotheraspectsthathavenotbeenexploredinthisstudy.
