- ThisthesisisapragmaticstudyaboutcomplimentresponsesusedbyIndonesianslearningEnglishtorespondtoEnglishcomplimentsbasedonthecomplimenttopics(appearanceandability)andsocialstatusesoftheaddressor(higherequalandlower).ThedataofcomplimentresponseswerecollectedusingaDiscourseCompletionTest(DCT)andaquestionnaire.ThedatawerethenanalyzedusingthetaxonomyofcomplimentresponsesformulatedbyHerbert(198679ascitedinUrano1998).Theresultsofthisstudyshowedthatappreciationtokenwasthemostfrequentlyusedinallsituationsgiveninthisstudy.Moreoveritwasrevealedthatthefactorofthesubjectsbackground(academicyearcohort)didnotgiveasignificanteffectonthepreferenceofthetypesofcomplimentresponses.
