  • ABSTRACTAgrikaltariniGaluhDwiretnoNiken.2008.UsingStoryMappingThroughCooperativeLearningtoImprovetheEightGradersReadingAbilityofSMPNegeri4Malang.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLetters.StateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDra.SriAndreaniM.Ed.KeyWordsstorymappingcooperativelearningimprovereadingandability.Thisstudyisintendedtodescribehowtheuseofstorymappingcanhelptheeightgradersimprovetheirabilityincomprehendingreadingtexts.Theresearcherwasinterestedindoingthestudybecausetheteachingtechniqueappliedbytheteacherwasnoteffectivetomakethestudentcomprehendreadingtextandalsobecausethestudentsscoresinreadingwerebelowtheminimummasterylearningstandard(SKBM).ThesubjectsofthestudywerethestudentsofclassVIIIBofSMPNegeri4Malang.ThestudywasdesignedasaclassroomactionresearchfollowingKemmisandMcTaggartsmodel.Thestudywasconductedintwocycleseachofwhichconsistedoffourstepsnamelyplanningimplementationobservationandreflection.Intheplanningstagetheresearcherdesignedthelessonplanpreparedtheresearchinstrumentspreparedtheinstrumentofevaluationofthestudentsmasteryandpreparedthecriteriaofsuccess.Intheimplementationstagetheresearcherconductedwhathadbeendesignedinthelessonplan.Intheobservationstagetheresearcherrecordedandcollecteddataofthestorymappingimplementation.Lastinthereflectionstagetheresearcherdecidedwhetherornotthetechniqueappliedwassuccessfultosolvestudentsprobleminreading.Theinstrumentstocollectthedataweretheevaluationsheetofthelessonplanfieldnotesandstudentsresponsejournal.Therewasalsoaninstrumentintheformofquizforevaluatingthestudentsmastery.Theresultsofthisstudyshowthatstorymappingimprovesthestudentsabilityincomprehendingreadingtextsespeciallynarrative.MostofthestudentsscoresinquizineachcycleaftertheimplementationofthetechniquewereabovetheSKBM.ThestudentslearningprogressreportscoresaftertheimplementationofthetechniquewerealsosimilarinwhichhalfofthestudentsscoreswereabovetheSKBM.Storymappingactivatesthestudentsaswellastheteacherthusmakestheclassrunmorelively.Storymappingmakesiteasierforthestudentstounderstandareadingtext.Thistechniquealsopromotescooperationandappreciationamongthestudents.ThereareseveralsuggestionsthatoughttobeconsideredbytheEnglishteachers.Firstitisimportantforteacherstovarytheirteachingtechniquesinordertoavoidstudentsboredom.Secondteachersshoulddesignclassactivitiesthatactivatethestudents.Thirditisrecommendedfortheteacherstoincludestorymappingasoneoftheteachingtechniquesappliedintheclass.
