- ABSTRACTWidiyatmikaRofida.2008.UsingCreditPointSystemtoPromoteStudentsMotivationinOralParticipationinEnglishClassesatSMP1Malang.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDr.NurMukminatienM.Pd.Keywordscreditpointsystemmotivationoralparticipation.SpeakingasanorallanguageisoneoftheimportantEnglishskillswhichisconsideredessentialtobetaughtinthisglobalizationerainwhichcommunicationtakesanimportantroleininformationworld.Speakingisaproductiveskillthereforethestudentsarerequiredtoproducesamplesofthelanguage.HoweverinrealitythestudentshardlyspeakactivelyintheirEnglishclassestheytendtobeveryquietandbepassivelisteners.Thismaybecausedbymanypsychologicalfactorssuchasfearofmakingmistakesshynessandlowmotivation.ItisalsopossiblethatitiscausedbyexternalfactorssuchasthelackofspeakingopportunitytopracticeEnglishbothinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.Thereforeteachersasfacilitatorsandmotivatorsshouldfindwaystoencouragetheirstudentstospeak.Onealternativeofthewaysisbyusingcreditpointsystem.Itisasystemwhereteachersgivecertainpointstothestudentsduringtheteachingandlearningprocessinwhichthepointsareaccumulatedattheendofthestudyasaconsiderationofthefinalscore.ThisstudyisintendedtofindouthowcreditpointsystemcanencouragethestudentstogiveoralparticipationactivelyintheirEnglishclasses.Creditpointsystemisoneformofrewards.Ithasbeenfoundthatrewardwhichisasourceofexternalmotivatorscanincreaseintrinsicmotivation.Asanextrinsicmotivatorrewardisstilleffectiveandapplicabletobeusedineducationalsetting.Thisstudyusesclassroomactionresearch.Thesubjectsofthestudyare40studentsofclassVIIIAinSMP1MalangandtheEnglishteacherwhoperformsasthecollaborator.Ittakesfourmeetingswhicharecoveredintwocycles.Thedataaretakenfromtheobservationandtheinformalinterviewswiththeteacherandsomestudentsinrandomandanalyzeddescriptively.Therearetwocriteriaofsuccessengagedinthisstudyfirst75%ofthestudentsparticipateineachmeetingandsecond100%ofthestudentshavetakentheopportunitytospeakatleastonceinthecyclesduringthestudy.BasedontheresultofthestudyitisfoundoutthatafterbeingtreatedwiththecreditpointsystemstrategythestudentsareencouragedtospeakintheirEnglishclasses.Theyareactivelyinvolvedinoralparticipationduringtheteachingandlearningprocess.Theresultofthestudyshowsthetwocriteriaofsuccessarewellachievedwhichmeansthatthecreditpointsystemhasmotivatedthemtoparticipate.InconclusionthestrategyofcreditpointsystemappliedinthisstudyhassucceededinsolvingthestudentsproblemingivingoralparticipationintheirEnglishclasses.Toincreasetheirenthusiasmmoreitissuggestedthattheresultofthepointswhichhavebeencollectedandthestudentswhoobtainsthehighestpointsareannouncedtothem.Allowingthestudentstoknowtheirtotalpointsandtoknowthetopscorerofthepointsisdirectedtomotivatethemtoparticipatemore.Howevertokeepawayfromthehabitofmotivatingthestudentstowardwinningaprizeorexpectingsomethingforwhattheyhavedonethepointsshouldbegivenonlyintheinitialstagesoftheprogram.Oncethestudentshavedonethedesiredactsthepointsshouldbeerased.
