- ABSTRACTIndahyantiYuniRahmah.2008.ImprovingReadingComprehensionofElevenGradersofMAN3MalangthroughSQ3RStrategy.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDra.SriAndreaniM.Ed.KeywordsreadingcomprehensionSQ3Rstrategyimprovement.ThisstudywasconductedonthebasisofthepreliminarystudyinMAN3Malanginwhichtheresearcherfoundthat54.3%oftheelevengradersofIPAIIhadlackabilityinunderstandingthetext.Theirreadingcomprehensionscoresandtheclassmeaninthepre-testwerebelowthepassinggradeof7whichwas6.03.AsanattempttoovercomethestudentsdifficultyinreadingcomprehensiontheresearcherimplementedSQ3Rstrategy(surveyquestionreadreviewandrecite).Thisstudytookthedesignofclassactionresearchbecauseitaimedatimprovingtheexistingcondition.IncarryingoutthisstudytheresearcheractedastheteacherandtheEnglishteacherofMAN3Malangactedastheobserver.Thestudywascarriedoutintwocyclescontainingoffourstepsi.e.planningimplementingobservingandreflecting.Thesubjectsofthestudywere35elevengradersofIPAIIofMAN3Malangintheacademicyear2007/2008.Thedatawerecollectedthroughtworesearchinstrumentsobservationsheetandreadingcomprehensiontests.Allthedatawereanalyzedandtheresultoftheanalysiswascomparedtothecriteriaofsuccessdefinedinthisstudytoseewhetherornottheywereachieved.ThefindingsshowedthattheSQ3Rstrategycouldimprovethestudentsachievementinreadingcomprehension.Firstthenumbersofthestudentswhoobtainedthescoreofhigherthanorequalto7hasincreasedfrom32students(91.4%)incycle1to34students(97%)incycle2.Secondthemeanofthestudentsscoresinreadingcomprehensionalsoimprovedfrom6.03inthepretestto7.9incycle1and8.3incycle2.Thirdthenumberofthestudentswhomadeimprovementofatleast0.5pointintheirreadingcomprehensionincreasedfrom24students(68.6%)incycle1to26students(74.3%)incycle2.ItwasalsofoundthathavinganobserverduringtheteachingandlearningprocessofreadingcomprehensionusingSQ3Rstrategywasverybeneficialandhelpfulsincetheresearcherhastofocusonimplementingthestrategy.AnotheristhattheimplementationofSQ3Rstrategyinteachingandlearningofreadingcomprehensionneededmoretimeandenergysinceithasmanystepstodo.BasedonthefindingsabovesomesuggestionscanbeproposedforEnglishteachersandotherresearchers.FortheEnglishteachersitissuggestedthattheyimplementSQ3Rstrategytoimprovethestudentsreadingcomprehensionachievement.TheyshouldmakeagoodpreparationbeforeimplementingSQ3Rstrategy.TheyarealsosuggestedtokeepgivinghelpandguidanceduringtheimplementationofSQ3RstrategyandgiveaclearinstructiontothestudentsineverystepofSQ3Rtoavoidmisunderstandingontheinstructiongiven.ForthenextresearchersitissuggestedthattheyconductthesimilarstudyindifferentlevelswithdifferenttypesoftextinasimilarproblemtoseewhetherSQ3Rstrategyalsoapplicableandeffectivetoimprovethestudentsreadingcomprehensionachievement.
