- ABSTRACTWediyantoroPrillaLukis.2009.Using3-DAnimationMoviesasMediatoImprovetheSpeakingAbilityoftheStudentsatYASPAEnglishTraining(YET)CourseTrenggalek.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDrs.MurdibjonoM.A.KeyWordsspeakingskillmovie3-D(three-dimensional)movie.InIndonesiaEnglishhasbeentaughtsincethefourthgradeofelementaryschool.EveninsomeschoolsincitiesEnglishhasbeentaughtsincekindergarten.NeverthelessmostIndonesianstudentsstilllacktheabilitytospeakandsodothestudentsatYASPAEnglishTraining(YET)CourseTrenggalek.InspeakingclassestheteachersofYETusuallygiveadialogueofacertaintopic.Thenthestudentsaretopracticeandmemorizethedialoguewiththeirfriendsandfinallypresentthedialogueinfrontoftheclassinturn.Byusingthistechniquethemasteryofvocabularyforsomestudentsincreasesbuttheclassisusuallydominatedonlybysomeactivestudentswhiletheothersfeeldepressedeitherbecausetheyarenotgoodatmemorizingdialoguesorbecausetheyfeelshyiftheyhavetomakemistakesinfrontoftheclass.Fortheactiveandsmartstudentsitseemsthatthiskindoftaskiseasyandtheycanfollowtheclasswellbuttheweaknessisthattheyarejustabletospeakupthesentencesinthegivendialogues.Itisdifficultforthemtoproducetheirownsentences.Theactivitywasbegunbythewatchingthe3-Danimationmoviewhichwasappropriateforjuniorhighschoolstudentswhowereimaginativeandthenfollowedbyansweringtheresearchersquestionsanddescribingpicturesofthecharactersfromthemovie.Thenextactivitywasthewatchingofthecontinuationofthesamemovieandfollowedbyretellingstorythestudentsweretoretellwhathappenedinthemovie.Andthelastactivitywasthewatchingofthecontinuationofthesamemovieagainandfollowedbystorycompletionactivitystudentsweretocreatetheendingofthestoryorallybasedontheirownversion.Thoseactivitiesinvolvedgroupworkandwholeclassdiscussioninwhichthestudentsweregivenchancesasmuchaspossibletoexpresstheirideasbasedonthe3-Danimationmovietheywatched.Inbothpreliminarystudyandtheimplementationofthe3-Danimationmoviestrategythestudentswereassessedbyusingtwoassessments.Thoseweretheassessmentofthestudentsattitudeandtheassessmentofthestudentsspeakingability.Fromtheresultoftheresearchitwasfoundoutthattherewasasignificantprogressbetweenintermsofthestudentsattitudeandthestudentsspeakingability.Inthepreliminarystudythetotalaveragescoresof13outof22students(59.09%)were3.Thereforetheresearcherdecidedthatthesuccessofthisresearchwouldbegainedif880570%ofthestudents(15outof22students)gotthetotalaveragescores88053.Aftertheimplementationofthe3-Danimationmoviestrategyitwasproventhat18outof22studentsgotthetotalaveragescores88053.Toconcludethe3-Danimationmoviestrategyisoneoftheappropriatestrategiestosolvethestudentsprobleminspeakingbecauseaftertheimplementationofthe3-Danimationmoviestrategytheresultisquitesurprising.ThisstrategycanstimulatethestudentstospeakEnglishwell.ThestudentswhoareusuallyactivebecomemoreactiveandthestudentswhoareusuallypassiveinspeakingclassbecomeactiveandconfidenttoexpresstheirideasinEnglishorally.Itcanhappenbecausethestrategytheresearcherappliesisinterestingforthem.Theactivitiesarefunandexciting.BasedontheresultofthisresearchitissuggestedthattheteachersofYASPAEnglishTraining(YET)Courseapplythismodelasoneofthealternativemodelstobeusedinteachingspeakingandtointroducethe3-DanimationmoviestrategytoformalEnglishteachersinordertoimprovethespeakingabilityofthestudentsinformalschools.Itisalsoadvisableforthefutureresearchersthattheyconductsimilarresearchesonspeakinginothersettingsandinotherlearninginstitutionstofigureoutwhetherornotthestrategycanbeusedinordertosolvethestudentsspeakingabilityproblems.
