- ABSTRACTAbidasariErlyna.2008.TheImplementationofEnglishConversationClubasanExtracurricularProgramatSMPNegeri4Malang.ThesisStudyProgramofEnglishLanguageEducationFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorUtamiWidiatiM.APh.D.KeywordsEnglishconversationclubspeakingskillextracurricularprogramSMP.Withtheimplementationofthe2006School-basedCurriculumschoolsaregivenfreedomtoconstructandformulatethemostproperaimslessonmaterialsmediaaswellasmethodsofteachingduringtheschoolyears.ForthispurposeSMPN4Malanghasitsownprogramtheso-calledEnglishConversationClub(ECC)thataimstofosterupstudentsneedsforspeakingpractice.ItisdesignedtoprovidestudentswithskillofusingEnglishcommunicativelytosupportthedevelopmentoftheirproductiveskills.Theprogramissettleddownasanextracurricularwhichisconductedafterschooltogivewiderandmoreopportunitiestopracticeandexposethetargetlanguagewithoutbeingrestrictedmuchbythetimeallocation.ThisECCisassumedtobeworthexaminingsinceitscontributionswillbeusefulfortheschooldevelopment.Thisstudyemployedadescriptivedesign.ThesubjectsweretheVIIandVIIIgradesstudentsfollowingtheECCprogramtheEnglishteachersandtheheadmasterofSMPN4Malang.TheinstrumentsinthisstudywerefieldnotesinterviewguidesandquestionnairesaswellasanyavailabledocumentsupportingtheECCprogram.ThefindingsshowthepurposeofconductingtheECCtoestablishmoreopportunitiestospeakEnglishindailyandnaturalcontextswithcomfortableenvironment.Inadditionitalsoimplicitlypreparedstudentstobereadytocompeteinspeakingthesepurposesweresupportedbytheuseoffacilitiesmediaandmaterials.Thefacilitiesprovidedbytheschoolwereconsideredsufficientwhichwasreflectedintheexistenceoflanguagelaboratory.MeanwhilemostmediaweremadebytheteachersandthestudentssothattheyperfectlymatchtheaimsoftheECCactivities.Therewerehandmadescrabblemonopolyulartanggastudentsreportcardsteachersevaluationcardandgroupcards.FurtheranalysisonthematerialsshowedtheappropriatenessofthematerialsduetotheobjectiveoftheSchool-basedcurriculumthatwastouseEnglishinsimpledailylifecontexts.ConcerningthelearningprocessesconductedbytheteachersintheECCprogramtheprocesseswereclassifiedasgoodonessincethelearningprocessesgeneratedrelaxingyetresponsibleactivitiesthatfocusedonthedevelopmentofself-esteemself-confidenceaswellasself-motivationtoapplythetargetlanguage.Therewerefourobservablesessions(1)6Newsreading(2)WhoWantstobeaKing/Queen(3)TellandTransform(TT)and(4)Storytellingcompetition.ThenextfindingssummarizedthestudentsandteachersopinionsabouttheECCwhoseresultswerebothpositive.ThestudentsconsideredtheECCasanimportantextracurricularprogramtobefollowedandlatertobeimproved.QuitethesameasthestudentsopinionstheteachersagreedthatECCshouldbeconductedthroughouttheschoolyearstohelpstudentsachievebettermentinspeakingEnglish.HowevertheimplementationoftheECCwasconsideredlessmaximumtheECCneededimprovement.BasedontheresearchfindingssomesuggestionsweregivenfortheimprovementoftheECCprogram.TheECCprogramimplementedatSMPN4Malangshouldbesupportedbyallschoolmembersandschoolprograms.TheschoolshouldholdsomekindsofEnglishcompetitionsmoreoftentoarousestudentsmotivationstouseEnglish.RegardingtotheuseoffacilitiesmediaandmaterialstheECCinstructorsshouldimprovetheirskillsinoperatingdigitalequipmentssothattheyexperiencednodifficultyduringthepresentationtime.Inadditiontothemediaandmaterialsusethereshouldbemoreattractiveandinteractivemediaandmaterialswhichsupportthesuccessofthelearningprocesses.Sofartheinstructorsseemedtochoosesimpleandtraditionalones.Inlinewiththeimprovementoftheaboveaimsmoreinterestingfunandchallengingactivitiesshouldbeconductednotonlyindoorsbutalsooutdoors.FinallytheevaluationoftheprogramhadtobeconductedregularlyinordertohavevividpicturesoftheECCdevelopment.
