  • ABSTRACTSholikatinEnita.2008.AStudyonStudentsLearningStylePreferencesinLearningEnglishatSMPNegeri4Malang.Thesis.EnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDra.SriWidayatiM.Ed.Key-wordsLearningStylePreference.TheinformationaboutthediversityofstudentslearningstylepreferencesisessentialforEnglishlanguageteachingandlearningsinceitcanbeusedeitherbyteacherstodevelopanappropriatetreatmentorbythestudentsthemselvestoknowtheirstrengthsinmasteringEnglishasasecondlanguage.Duetotheimportanceofknowingthestudentslearningstylepreferencesthisstudywasconducted.ThisstudyaimstoknowthelearningstyleofthefirstgradethesecondgradeandthethirdgradestudentsofSMPNegeri4Malang.Thelearningstylepreferencestobeinvestigatedareperceptuallearningstyles(auditoryvisualkinestheticandtactile)andsociallearningstyle(groupandindividual).Thedesignofthisstudyisprincipallydescriptive.ConsequentlytheemphasisofthisstudyistodescribethenatureofthelearningstylepreferencesofstudentsofSMPNegeri4Malang.Thusthevariableinthisstudyarethestudentslearningstylepreferencesandstudentsgrade.ForpracticalreasonsthesampleofthisstudywasdrawnusingstratifiedrandomsamplingasaresultVII-CVIII-EandIX-Eclasseswerechosenassamples.ThemaininstrumenttocollectthedataisaquestionnairewhichisadoptedfromJoyMReidsPerceptualLearningStyleQuestionnaire(1987).Thedatafromquestionnaireswereanalyzedquantitativelytofindthemeans.Furthermorethewriteralsoanalyzedtheoverallmeansofallgradesbydoinganalysisofvariance(ANOVA)inSPSSprogram.Moreovertogainfurtherinformationandtosupportthemaindatathedataalsoderivedfrominterviewswiththestudentsandtheteacherswhichwereanalyzedqualitatively.Thisstudyrevealsthatthefirstandthesecondgradestudentschosekinestheticasthemostpreferredoflearningstyleswhilethethirdgradestudentschosegroup.Besidesthedatarevealedthatthefirstandthesecondgradestudentshavemultiplemajorlearningstyleswhilethethirdgradestudentshaveasinglemajorlearningstyle.Furthermoreaninterestingtrendwasfoundthatallofthethreegradeshavethesamepreferenceingrouplearningastheirmajorlearningstyle.ItreflectsthatSMPNegeri4Malangstudentslikecooperatetowithatleastoneotherstudentoringroup.Fromtheresultsitissuggestedthattheteachersoffirstandsecondgradestudentsshouldtreatthemwithmanykindsofactivitiesinvolvingtheirbodymovementlikeroleplay.WhereasfortheteachersofthirdgradestudentstheteachersshouldtreatthemwithmuchofgroupworkorgroupcompetitioninlearningEnglishsincemostofthemstronglylikegrouplearning.Inadditionvaryingactivitiesinclassroomisneededsinceeverystudenthasdifferentlearningstylepreferences.
