  • ThisisapragmaticinvestigationintothespeechactofrefusingasmadebyEnglishDepartmentstudentsofStateUniversityofMalang.Thisstudyinvestigatesrefusalsofthirtyparticipantstorequestofhigherequalandlowerstatusinterlocutors.SubjectsrefusalswerecollectedusingaDiscourseCompletionTest(DCT)takenfromBeebeTakahashiandUliss-Weltz(1990).TheyareaskedtorespondinEnglishtothreedifferentsituationsinwhichtheycarryoutthespeechactofrefusal.Thefirstsituationdescribesanemployer-employeerelationship.Heretherespondentshavetorefusealowerstatusinterlocutorinthiscaseistheemployee.Thesecondsituationdescribesafriendshiprelationshipsincetherespondentshavetorefuseanequalstatusinterlocutor.Thethirdsituationdescribesanemployer-employeerelationshipasinthefirstsituation.Howeverinthissituationtherespondentshavetorefuseahigherstatusinterlocutorthatishis/herboss.DataaremainlyanalyzedintermsofsemanticformulasequencesandwerecategorizedaccordingtotherefusaltaxonomybyBeebeetal.(1990).SemanticformulaswhichdonotfittherefusaltaxonomybyBeebeetal.areanalyzedbasedonKwonsfindingswhiletheothersarelabeledbytheresearcher.Resultsindicatethatalthoughasimilarrangeofrefusalstrategiesarefoundinrefusalstohigherequalandlowerstatusinterlocutorsthecontentortoneoftheformulasaredifferent.Forinstanceinusingthestatementofregrettheparticipantsaremorelikelytouseintensification(e.g.IdoapologizeImverysorryetc.)torefusehigherstatusinterlocutorsbutnottoequalandlowerstatusinterlocutor.Overalltheparticipantstendtomitigateorlessentheeffectoftheirrefusalsinrefusinghigherandlowerstatusrequesters.RefusinginanL2isacomplextaskbecauseitrequirestheacquisitionofthesocio-culturalvaluesofthetargetculture.ThusinacquiringanL2itisnotenoughtoonlystudythelanguagegrammarbutalsotheculturetoeffectivelycommunicatewithL2nativespeakers.Duetothemethodologyofwrittendataelicitationotherfactorssuchasintonationtonestressnon-verbalgesturesandfacialexpressionswerenotobserved.Thusnaturalisticdatacollectionfromroleplaysorrecordingsmadeinnaturalsettingswouldbedesirableasbothacomplementandasaself-standingmethodologyinmoreextensivestudies.
