- ThisresearchattemptstodescribethetypesofcodeswitchinginSMSmessagessentbyJavanese-speakingstudentsandtheprobablereasonswhytheydoit.Theresearchdesignofthisresearchisdescriptivequalitative.Thesourceofthedatais105SMSmessagesandthedurationofthedatacollectionstartedfrom13November2007until14February2008.TheresultsshowthatthetypesofcodeswitchingfoundinSMSmessagessentbyJavanese-speakingstudentsare(1)intra-sententialcodeswitching(641%)whichinvolvesawordwithinasentence(307%)asinglenounfromanotherlanguage(141%)averbphrase(55%)anounphrase(42%)aquestion(36%)aquestiontag(24%)anadjectivalphrase(18%)(2)inter-sententialcodeswitching(135%)(3)emblematiccodeswitching(11%)(4)intra-lexicalcodeswitching(74%)and(5)changingpronunciationfeatures(36%).Italsofoundnewkindsofintra-sententialcodeswitchingwhichinvolvesaquestionandanadjectivalphraseoccurringinthisresearch.Moreovertwoothertypesofcodeswitchingwhicharenotfoundintheresearchare(1)continuingthepreviousspeakerand(2)intra-sententialcodeswitchingwhichinvolvesanindependentclause.Thehighfrequencyoftheoccurrencesoftheintra-sententialcodeswitchinghappenedbecausemostsendersliketodothecodeswitchingbyplacingawordwithinasentenceaverbphraseanounphraseaquestionaquestiontagandanadjectivalphraseintheirmessage.Theydothesebecausethosekindsofintra-sententialcodeswitchingcanshortentheirmessageandcanshowtheirgroupidentity.Inadditionmostofthewordsfromotherlanguagestheyareusedarefamiliartothem.Ontheotherhandthelowestfrequencyoftheoccurrencesofchangingpronunciationfeatureshappenedbecausefewsendersarenotusedtodoingthiskindofcodeswitchinginsendingtheirmessages.Onlyaverylimitednumberofwordsoccurinthislasttypearefamiliaramongthesenderscommunity.ThereforetheyrarelyusethemintheirSMSmessages.Inthisresearchtheprobablereasonsinclude(1)insertingsentencefillersorsentenceconnectors(209%)(2)softeningorstrengtheningrequestorcommand(139%)(3)economy(113%)(4)expressinggroupidentity(104%)(5)intentionofclarifyingthespeechcontentforinterlocutor(95%)(6)talkingaboutaparticulartopic(78%)(7)areallexicalneed(78%)(8)beingemphaticaboutsomething(69%)(9)presentingtermsofaddress(61%)(10)quotingsomebodyelse(26%)and(11)repetitionusedforclarification(26%).SincealmostallofthemessagesenderscanspeakmorethantwolanguagesmanykindsofsentencefillersorsentenceconnectorsareusedintheSMSmessages.Moreovertheyusethemtoexpresstheirfeelingwhichcanindicatetheiremotionalstateorattitudesuchasdelightsurpriseshockdisgustetc.OntheotherhandthelowestfrequencyoftheoccurrencesofthelasttwoprobablereasonsforcodeswitchingoccurringbecausemostofthemessagesinthisresearchareindailylanguagesothatonlyafewofthesendersusequotationsorrepetitionsintheirSMSmessages.Mostofthesendersprefertowritetheirmessageasefficientlyaspossible.TheydonotwanttheirSMSmessagestobetoolongandcannotbeunderstoodeasily.Inadditiontheymightfeeltheyaredifficult.Oneoftheprobablereasonsforcodeswitchingeconomyisanewprobablereasonfoundinthisresearch.ThisresearchsuggeststheSociolinguisticsstudentsshouldthinkmorecriticallyabouttheotherinterestingphenomenainwrittendiscourseexistinginsocietyinordertogiveusefulcontributiontotheSociolinguisticstudy.Moreoverthefutureresearchersareexpectedtodevelopandbroadentheirresearchbyincludingalltheaspectsincodeswitching.
