- ThisstudyaimsatdescribingcodeswitchingfoundinIndonesianpopsongscomposedbysomeIndonesianpopsongcomposers.TherearetworesearchproblemsinthisstudynamelywhattypesofcodeswitchingarefoundinIndonesianpopsongcomposedbyIndonesianpopsongcomposersandwhatarethereasonswhythecomposersswitchthelanguageintheirsongs.ThisstudyisexpectedtogivesomeusefulcontributionstothetheoryofSociolinguisticsparticularlythetheoryofcodeswitching.ThefindingsofthisstudyareexpectedtogivesomeusefulinsightstoEnglishDepartmentstudentsinordertogetbetterunderstandingoftheuseofcodeswitchingbyIndonesianpopsongcomposers.Theresearchdesignofthisstudyisdescriptivequalitativeandthedataofthestudyisintheformofwrittenlyrics.Therearethreestepsforcollectingthedata(1)findingthelyricsofIndonesianpopsongsintheinternetandinthesongsmagazines(2)selectinglyricsthatconsistofIndonesian-Englishcodeswitchingand(3)codingtheselectedcodeswitching(data)bygivingnumberstohelptheanalysisrunwell.Theresultsshowthatthereare4typesofcodeswitchingwhichareusedbyIndonesianpopsongcomposers.Theyare(1)intra-sententialswitching(2)inter-sententialswitching(3)emblematicswitchingand(4)involvingawordwithinasentence.Thereare6reasonswhyIndonesianpopsongcomposerscodeswitchfromonelanguageintoanotherintheircomposedsongs.Theyare(1)talkingaboutaparticulartopic(2)insertingasentencefillersorsentenceconnectors(3)repetitionusedforclarification(4)expressinggroupidentity(5)softeningandstrengtheningrequestorcommandand(6)insertingareallexicalneed.FromthefindingsInter-sententialswitchingismostlyusedbysomeIndonesianpopsongcomposersbecausetheyprefertoexpresstheirmessagesfromonelanguagethencodeswitchitintoanotherlanguage.Emblematicswitchingistheleastcodeswitchingwhichisfoundinthisstudybecauseemblematiccodeswitchingastagsorexclamationsasanemblemofbilingualcharacterisusuallyfoundinexchangewhereasmostofthesongstellaboutstories.ItisknownthatIndonesianpopsongcomposersdocodeswitchingbecausetheymostlytalkaboutparticulartopicsnamelyloveunityandpartyandtheyintenttoshowofftheirgroupidentityasIndonesianpopsongcomposerswhoareabletocodeswitchintoEnglishintheircomposedsongs.InsertingasentencefillersorsentenceconnectorsistheleastreasonwhytheIndonesianpopsongcomposercodeswitchesherlanguagefromBahasaIndonesiaintoEnglishbecausesentencefillersorsentenceconnectorssometimesareusedinconversationwhichoccurintentionallyorunintentionally.Besidesusuallybilingualormultilingualusesthembecausehe/shehasbeenfamiliarwiththem.
