- ABSTRACTPurwantiRia.2017.TheUseofCrosswordPuzzletoImproveStudentsVocabularyMasteryatSeventhatSMPN2Maron.ThesisDepartmentofEnglishLiteratureFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.Advisors(I)Drs.AndiMuhtarM.A.(II)Dr.EnnyIrawatiM.Pd.KeywordsVocabularyMasteryCrosswordPuzzleGameThisresearchwasaClassroomActionResearch(CAR)whichaimedtoimprovestudentsvocabularymasterybyusingacrosswordpuzzlegame.TheresearchstudywasconductedatSMPN2Maron.BasedontheresultsofthepreliminarystudyintheformofavocabularytestforstudentsandaninterviewtotheEnglishteacheritwasfoundthatstudentshaddifficultyacquiringnewvocabularyinEnglish.30studentsofgrade7Aweretreatedassubjectsofthisstudy.Theresearchstudywasconductedinthreemeetings.ThisformofresearchisacollaborativeclassroomactionresearchwhichwasaimedatsolvingproblemsthatwereexperiencedbyEnglishteachersinvocabularymasteryofthestudents.InthisresearchtheEnglishteacheractedasacollaboratorwhichobservedtheuseofcrosswordpuzzlegameintheclassroom.Thisclassroomactionresearchconsistedofseveralactivitiesincorporatedinthecycleconsistingofplanningimplementingobservingandreflecting.Researcheronlyhadonecycleofresearchbecausetheresultsofstudentslearninghasmetthecriteriaofsuccess.Basedontheresultsoftheapplicationoflearningstrategiesusingcrosswordpuzzlegamethisgamehadapositiveimpactonstudentsvocabularymastery.Atthefirstmeetingstudentsweregivenareadingtextaccordingtothetopic.Studentswerethenaskedtoaskadifficultvocabularyandweregivenacrosswordpuzzlegame20questions.Inthesecondmeetingstudentswereaskedtomention20vocabularythathadbeenlearnedinthepreviousmeeting.Afterthatstudentsweregivencrosswordpuzzlestotaling20questions.Atthelastmeetingstudentswereaskedtoname40vocabularythatwerelearnedatthepreviousmeeting.Finallystudentsweregivenavocabularytestofwhattheyhadlearnedinthepreviousmeetings.Theresultofthestudentstesthadreachedthestandardscorethathadbeensetthatis76.Allthestudents(30people)hadreachedthestandardscoreoraboveorif100%studentshadreachedthestandardscore.InadditionaquestionnaireaboutstudentsopinionsontheuseofcrosswordpuzzlegameshowedpositiveresultsonstudentsvocabularymasteryinEnglish.Basedonthefindingsresearchergavesomesuggestionstominimizeproblemsinvocabularymastery.SuggestionsforEnglishteacherstheresearchersuggestedtoEnglishteacherstousecrosswordpuzzlegamesincethisgamehelpsstudentsimprovestudentsvocabularymastery.Inadditionteacherswerealsoencouragedtomotivatestudentssothattheycouldimprovetheirownvocabularyusingthisgame.Forotherresearcherstheyareabletodoresearchusingthisgameinhigherstudentlevelsanddifferentscopessoastoknowthepowerofthisgameinimprovingvocabularymastery.
